I drove up to marina to find the hazmat crew, divers, fire trucks, etc. working on a 30ft. Bayliner that sunk. Word is that the boat was neglected and not properly winterized. It goes to show that you have to winterize even in central Texas.

That is so sad... How someone would neglect their boat instead of either selling or give it away to some charitable group... :smt021

That water looks frekin ugly!

We have the same issues at our marina. When I was the Commodore for our boat club I tried to get rid of a boat and owner for lack of use and care. Because we are on an Army Post they said we needed to give him another chance. So we did.
His boat went in for one year, he never came down and then pulled it in the winter. Now for the last 5 years it has sat on the hard. No cover no care. How?
Now we have three boats like his and not sure when we will see them out of here.

What a shame.

Every marina, yacht club or boat club has a few boats that never go out and are totally neglected. Sad to see, but there's not much can be done about it as long as the owner is current on his moorage payments.

As I watched the crew pulling the boat up and expelling the water, I kept looking over at my boat shiny and clean. I thought, this is another great lesson for me to keep your boat on a good maintenance plan. Talking with my boat mechanic, it is amazing to hear stories how people do not care for their boats. :smt101

Your boat may have been shiny and clean but it now probably has a heck of a scum line thanks to this guy!

Actually, I was watching for oil/gas in the water by my boat. I let the Hazmat guy know which boat was mine and to contain oil going the direction of my boat. It probably did not do any good.

Oil you might have to be concerned about. The gas no. It will evaporate into the air. We had a boat that got hung up on a very high tide. When the DNR showed they weren't concerned about the gas only the oil.

I'm at Frank's Marina. I actually live closer to Morgan's Point, but they have no openings.
I stopped by there today during my travels. The cleanup was just wrapping up this afternoon. It sounds like it went down quickly since a "dock walk" had been completed shortly before.

Just based on the number of HAZMAT vehicles there, that is going to be a serious cleanup bill.

Next time you are in the area, give me a shout. PM me for sure.

YUP, another bayliner fullfilling it's destiny. (sorry, couldn't resist, but this model is exactly the one I singled out sometime ago for being the proto-typical junk boat)

Some bayliner models have stood the test of time (i.e. Doug's) but the Ciera series were doomed from the start to be junk yard relics.
Any boat would have fulfilled this destiny. I'm told that it was rarely used over the years. Floating storage?

The owner didn't (couldn't/wouldn't) show up for the recovery, removal, and cleanup.

Sure. Any boat neglected to that degree would sink. But, usually, it's one particular brand that is neglected more often than others, and it starts with a B. If you don't believe me, check around your local salvage yards, and in the corners of your own marinas. You'll find them there, forelorn, covered in sea gull poop, and spider webs with their chalky blue stripes fading to white, plastic portlights breaking down, and arches sagging. (How's that for an accurate description?)
I know what you are saying. I just think it doesn't depend on the make when you are talking about neglect.

Hmm...Maybe some makes lend themselves to better care than others.
