Hi all.

While having my morning shower yesterday I noticed that water was pooling at my foot and sump box was not pumping and emergency bilge pump at the back of sump was pumping due to overflow of sump.

I opened the sump to check it and float was working and the bilge pump too but not discharging. When I uninstalled the check valve in the short hose in front of the bilge pump and reassambled them and voila water was pumping overboard but the remaining water in the discharge hose backflows to the sump, and once a 1-2 minute pump recycles.

Any tricks to fix it instead of replacing the check valve as it is not sold in my country and I have to buy it from USA which would arrive me at the end of september.

TIA.

Leave it out, they don't do much other than stop back flow. With the pump working properly, it should be no big deal

Other then replacing the valve, the only other thing I can think of is trying to find another pump that has one built in...

See if you can get a Whale non-return valve. They are specifically designed for these types of applications.

Thanks,
Yes it's working properly but more often than usual which my batteries can keep up with it.

Thanks Josh.
Dou you know any kind of that will fit in the same place of existing pump in the sump ?

Thanks TT.
Do you mean the checkvalve outside of sump box fitted to the discharge hose ?

Yes, outside. They are called "non-return valves". Whale and Jabsco make them. They have a very low cracking (opening) pressure and are specifically for bilge and other low pressure pumps.

I am just saying go to your local boat store and I'll almost guarantee you they have a bilge pump with a check valve, no need to keep it the same brand...

Thanks, gonna try fit there.

Just be mindful of the height of the over all pump.

I would just run w/o the valve while your ordered valve gets to your location. I would order 2 so you have a spare.

One comment to the above, I had a backflow valve go bad because the rubber became brittle. The pump would turn on and push out most of the water but due to the nature and direction of the hose water would run back into the pump and within a few seconds the pump would cycle back on. This continued over and over because I leave the AC in dehumidifier mode. The sump box would drain just to the point of cutting off the pump, but the back flow of water would raise the float to kick the pump back on in short cycle. As as result, the pump burned out. Maybe others have a different experience due to the way the hoses route.

Just found a Jabsco valve which is called "joker valve" and its the same as rule.
But what I found is smaller than my dead valve.

First I installed the small new one and it didn't pump, so I placed the valve (which is placed in a black hose shorter than the dirty white color hose outlet of bilge pump) as near as possible to the bilge pump outlet and voila problem solved.

I talked again with the Jabsco guy and he says there is only one size valve and this is what I needed but he couldn't answer my question about does the old one enlarged by getting wet and soap/chemicals over years ?

Have the same problem Just ordered the Whale non-return valve from Defender.com.
$23.00. had it in one day, will install this weekend.

Found the check valve from jabsco at 4€+vat which equates to $ 5,5 locally which is same price of USA and got another as spare.
What I bought is Jabsco M 1086, I guess yours is an engine room bilge pump size.

Mine was not pumping and overflowing to the emergency cabin bilge pump compartement while having shower and emergency was keeping up the water and not a drip of water passed to the engine room via the whole at the back of the compartement.

My main fear is as same as what you mentioned to burn the pump which is cycling every 30-60 second without check valve due to the remaining water in the discharge hose backflowing to the sumpbox and this continues until a new valve being put.

That's what happened to me.
