My partner and I recently purchased a 2000 410EC in outstanding condition. One of the very few discrepancies on the vessel was a slight leak on the port rudder post seal. The surveyor annotated that there appeared to be enough packing. Does anyone have experience compressing the packing on a rudder post?

Loosen the lower nut (the jam nut) from the packing nut. To loosen, you actually "tighten"- lowering the jam nut. This will allow you to tighten the packing nut; then raise the jam nut back up tight to the packing nut.

tobnpr - Thanks for the advice. Since the jam nut is left hand threaded to seat with the packing nut, I assume the packing nut tightens in a clockwise fashion. True statement?

Not sure I follow- both the packing and jam nuts are threaded the same (right hand)- they have to be...
I've never seen a LH threaded rudder post.

What I was saying is that by "tightening" (turning clockwise) the jam nut you're actually loosening it from the packing nut by creating "space" that will allow you to tighten the packing nut. When you've tightened the packing nut to the extent needed, you then turn the jam nut CCW back up into contact with the packing nut.
