1997 330DA...I'm trying to route the wiring from the arch to the helm for a Garmin radar dome. The power cable is no problem. The data cable (like ethernet) has a large bayonet fitting on each end. The holes out of the arch are not large enough for this fitting to pass and the hole is not accessible without major disassembly of the helm seating. Is there an alternative that anyone has experienced? I will call Garmin as well, but wondered who else has tackled this issue?

Update...I found that a new RJ45 end can be purchased and crimped on. I assume that is my best option. Routing the wire without an end fitting will be easy enough.

You may know this but you're going to need an RJ45 crimper. Garmin sells the connectors including the collar and shielded connectors with a drain wire. It's debatable whether the collar and shielding is necessary if the MFD or hub you are going to connect to is in a protected space but probably prudent to go ahead with the collars. You will need to know which end of the cable is cut off since Garmin uses crossover cables with the wires at positions 1&3 and 2&6 reversed.

Yes, I know a crimping tool is needed and that the ends are unique one to the other. My question then is, if there is a requirement which way a cable is installed? Or can the cable be installed with either end in the MFD? I could find nowhere that said it would make a difference.

No requirement I have ever seen for which end to put where. I suspect the use of crossover cables is left over from much earlier iterations of the Garmin Network. Newer ethernet jacks are capable of coping with the wiring of the cable. I have heard from others of grabbing a regular ethernet cable in a pinch and everything working just fine. But, with the cost of our equipments, no point in experimenting.
