Until I can afford the upgrade for new electronics I must make do with the 10 year old c80. Question: Is there a way to plan a route, i.e., Active Captain, and then input the Lat and Lon of the waypoints into the c80? Otherwise it is a pain to scroll through the chart and place them. Kind of takes away the convenvenience and ease of plotting routes via Active Captain if I can't easily put them into the plotter.

I think you can create a route on a pic then upload to a memory card. I gave up on my C80 for trip planning. What I do is use my iPad with a chart system. I use EarthNC to plan my routes...then use the track recorder in the C80 to save the Route for future use.

I know the feeling. Yes, there are tools for remote planning. As Madifonzo said, you can buy PC card reader (~$150) for Navionic CF cards, download (it used to be free) PC Planning software from RM site and that will do the trick.

If you decide to keep plotting the route on the MFD, there are few things to concider for saving the time. Years ago I wold have routes consist of quite a bit of waypoints. Needless to say that with all my routes and waypoints, I've maxed out on my E120s storage. So, fast forward few years, my new routes now-days have very few waypoints. They're only used for general guidence in new or confusing waterways. Once I have my bearings through confusing section I just follow the charted channel markers.

The bottom line is that if you change your plotting habits, it won't be too painful to do it right on the plotter.

Thanks, I read and reread the manual and quick user guide for a way to inpout preplanned routes. Found nothing and felt it just had to be me missing something. Converting to a new Garmin unit this fall which will allow planning on the Ipad and then sending it to the Garmin on the boat. Until then I'll just use the Ipad with my Iphone as a WiFi hotspot as needed.

Cutting down on waypoints is also a good recomendation. I'll do some revisions this weekend. When I run to Ocracoke in 2 weeks I can then put the waypoints into the c80 as I go. Should be a little less tedious.

I too have a C80 and its a pain to do a route. And each route is maxed to 50 waypoints. My routes from Southern Georgian Bay to Killarney in the north ended up being over a dozen, and switching from one route to another isn't what I'd call fun. So I too use Navionics on my phone/ipad for the routes, and use the tracks on the C80.

Now that you've mentioned that you have an iPad, you can use that as your "primary MFD" for pre-plotted routes. When you on the trip following your iPad's route, use TRACK feature on C80. When you arrive, save the track and then convert it to a route, which is built in feature. It's not perfect, but it'll help to save a lot of time vs. creating a route from scratch.

Speaking of the Ipad. Are there any good removable mounts/holders for Ipads out there to attach somewhere at the helm area?

I use the Ram Mount with Suction Cup holder. Works great...
