Hey Guys, had my second trip out on the new boat and it was great! For those in the area, we are docked in the Stratford CT area and spent much of the time cruising up and down the Housatonic river this weekend. At the end of the day we ventured out into the sound between CT and Long Island and boy was the water rough. We spent about 10 mins out and then turned back. We were wondering if the water is always this rough or was it due to time of day/month. We had hoped to make a trip between CT and Port Jefferson one day however if the water is normally this rough i doubt we will. Our boat is a 21'.5 Sea Ray 215 Cruiser so i'm not sure if its not suited for the Sound even though much of the reviews said it would be. Either way we had a great time on the river.

Your boat is fine for the Sound. You just have to watch the weather and the wind direction. If staying on the CT shore, then West or SW wind is your best days to be out there. The land will keep the seas down closer to shore, even on a windy days. Anything E or NE will make the Sound very rough for your boat.

I was not on the boat this weekend, so I have no clue what conditions were like, but the mouth of the Housatonic can be very rough, even if the sound is calm. When wind and current are in opposition there are often standing waves just west of the breakwater that are treacherous for any small boat. LIS will certainly have days that will challenge your boat, but watch the weather and you'll be fine. I have crossed LIS hundreds of times in boats as small as 13'.

Next time you cruise past Brewers give me a shout.

If your up the river I am at the very last marina, Ayers Landing. I had a 90 220DA and would cross over to PJ. Had a hell ride back last year in a 5' following sea, wasn't fun but made it back safe. There is a great group that we head over with. We will probably be heading over the weekend after the 4th.

The folks here are correct. Your boat is fine to cross as long as you pay good attention to weather and winds. It is amazing how a small shift in wind direction can really create havoc on the Sound. I use to cross over to Port Jeff on a 19FT twin engine Jet Boat from Milford. Light as a feather and definitely not ideal for any chop...but always did it when conditions were favorable...

Now I am in Westbrook and cross over to Greenport...Plum Gut is always a carnival ride!

Enjoy

Keep an eye on the marine forecast too.... http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/zone/east/okxmz.htm

Thanks all, i'll definitely keep an eye on the marine forecast. We have 3 small children therefore their safety is number one. Its great to see there are some local folks on here as well.

How old are your kids?
