Rotary Buffer

You'll love the Makita for the boat. Get a couple of wool pads, and you're ready to go.
Good luck with it!

I got my Makita 9237CX2 from Marine 31 and love it. My first hull polish (white foam pad) paid for the tool

My Makita 9237CX3 order was placed yesterday. Can't wait to get at it. I'm switching over to a 3 step 3M regimen of Perfect-it, Finesse-It II, and Liquid Wax. The Makita should be a good addition, from what all have said here. I'll keep my old buffer for when 2 of us are working.

Milwaukee makes the best polisher you can buy, hands down. It's also the heaviest and will give you upper body strength like Schwarzenegger in his prime. :) I've probably buffed over a hundred boats with mine and only replaced the brushes.

I've been using a Milwaukee on both boats since last spring. The quality is impressive, and now I'm more comfortable walking through bad neighborhoods at night. I don't actually mind the weight of it - the power helps with control and the grips are comfortable etc, but I find it rather loud.

Ok, so just as I was considering entering myself in a regional arm-wrestling competition, I decided that polishing 68 ft of old SeaRay (40+28) is too much to survive the Milwaukee. I hindsight, I should've checked out the reviews and looked for a coupon first, but I went to HF and bought a polisher.

Pros: It's LIGHT! It's quieter than the 'waukee. It has a cool digital read-out. The handles are comfortable. Plenty of power.

Cons: They define "variable speed" differently than I do. By my definition, it's MULTI-speed. The lowest speed is "15", but it feels like it's between 1,800-2,000 rpm. IMO, the speeds are: fast, too fast, way too fast... There's no trigger, instead a sliding power button and then the speed buttons start the motor. It takes some getting used to. I'm concerned that if I wrapped the cord around the pad or otherwise needed to shutdown in a hurry, I couldn't. I prefer a trigger.

The online reviews warn me that it will fail in a matter of days. I'm only 1 day in, so I'll see how long it lasts, but my back and shoulders are already happier.

I've used just about every polisher out there and without a doubt the go to polisher is the Flex PE14-2-150. It is very powerful, variable speed, soft start with a variable speed trigger and speed dial. It will turn any pad i have ever tried and never bogs and its small enough that with a 3" wool bonnet you can buff places you'll never get near with most other polishers. Yeah it's stupid expensive at $400, but you get what you pay for.

I got a 6" Griot's random orbital for Christmas and the thing is a beast. They also sell 5" back and pads for this. I'm new to the boating world and mine was polished by the dealer before I picked it up last month. However; I did a full polish and triple coat of their Best of Show Wax on my Bimmer and was very impressed. Nice variable speed and gobs of power. Griot's sells and stands behind some of the best automotive detailing products on the market.
