Right Prop?

OK I need to determine if I am running the right prop. I know that I need to see what the WOT is. I dont have the manuals for the boat, (1977 cant download from sea ray) heres what I know.

235 OMC (I am told its a 351 Windsor) with a Holley 4-barrel
OMC Stringer outdrive.

I normally run with 10-30 gallons of fuel, no water and 1-4 adults.

I havnt had it above 4000 rpms, just out of respect for the 30 year old engine, however, at 4k, messing with all the trim selections, the best I could do was 22kts. I normally run closer to 3500rpms which gives me 17(ish) kts. This is according to the GPS.

the current prop is an alum. 14x16.

So I guess the question is, what should I see for a WOT.

AND,,,, Should I leave well enough alone and not further abuse the old engine. Honestly, I dont really feel the need to GIVE ME a reason to repower right now.

On a side note, I jacked up a prop loading passengers at a ramp with no dock. When I pulled out the backup (also alum 14x16) the boat slowed down a few kts but got up on plane a little better,,,,thoughts? Stiffer prop maybe?

I believe 4,400 RPM was the upper end of the WOT range for your engine. I was very young back in '77, however I remember looking at the specs for Fords and Chevys and the marinized chevy 350 4V (260 HP at the crank) would turn up a couple hundred more RPM than the marinized Ford. Let us know if you find the specs. from a manual.

The prop charts on searay.com (searay home/service/prop charts) go back to '79'. I'm sure those numbers can't be too different from '77'. It shows WOT for your size boat and engine at 4600 with a 14x15 standard prop.
I'm not the prop expert here but I've learned a lot in the last year. Could it be the previous owner was having speed issues at high rpm so he went to a higher pitch prop? So you will get lower WOT with the 16 pitch prop as well as more load on the engine throughout the rpm range, assuming the specs are the same for '77'.
You might want to call a prop specialty shop. They might go the extra mile to get the right specs. Good luck.
