I have a 2003 sundeck 200 with alpha drive. Engine is 5.0 with 220 HP. Does any one know what is the best matched prop for water sports?

I currently am using a 14.5x19' pitch 3 blade prop.
I need a better hole shot and would like to sustain lower speeds. My top end speed is around 47 and RPM's are 4600. I am looking to go to a 4 blade prop and drop down to a 17" pitch.

Any sugestions would be appreciated.

I've got a 4 blade stainless on my 200 Select, but i dont know the specs on it. I have the same objectives. Get out of the hole and maintain plane at a lower speed. Right now i drop off plane at about 2800 rpm which is about 20mph.

Is there a solution to this?

Another thought is to try a hydofoil. I had the same objectives with my 210BR and have had some success with the Sting Ray XRIII Hydrofoil Stabilizer Senior. Pros: easy no-drill installation, allows me to stay on a plane at a much lower speed (12-14 MPH), planes quicker and helps with torque lean. Cons: reduced top speed, seems a bit less agile and makes it harder to pull crap out of the prop (algae) when in the water.

It was a pretty cheap (>$100) fix, so I gave it a try. I'm not completely sold, but I haven't taken it off either.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what HP your engine is generating? Is it carburated or fuel injected?

I looked at the "Sting Ray" and think it would be an additional
option after I got the right prop.

Thanks again

My 5.0L is the 240hp EFI version. I have a 3 blade Vengeance SS prop (not sure on the specs). My boat is pretty light (3,100 # dry weight), so I didn’t really have a hole shot issue. My main problem was being able to stay on a plane at low speeds. It can get pretty choppy afternoons in the delta especially in the main channels. I wanted to be able to stay on a plane without soaking everyone on board. The hydofoil did do a great job on that front with the added benefit of an improvement in hole shot and a bit less bow rise.

In general, I'm pretty happy with it, but there are some annoyance items:
• It is one size fits all, so the fit is not perfect. Good news is the Alpha One does not need the extra hold-down bolts.
• The speed tabs (cover the holes for the hold-down bolts) need to be glued in. The directions don’t mention that and without glue they are gone in 5 minutes.
• The recess for the anode is not deep enough, so it sticks out.
• It is pretty big, so I’ve managed to bump into it quite often.
• Out of the water, I think it looks pretty ugly.

Another thought would be Smart Tabs, the new SX series is not much more than that hydrofoil and they get you out of the hole better, you can stay on plane at slower speeds, you actually use less fuel, top speed can increase, they cut down on the idle speed wander, they do everything the hydrofoil does plus. I have them on my 185, pics in virtual marina, I have the stainless steel version. They are well worth the money.

Jarata,

You may want to add Merc's High 5 to your prop list depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

My previous boat was a 19' Crownline powered by a 5.0 LX/Alpha Drive with a 19" aluminum prop. Trying to get up on a slalom ski with this combo. was a true test of will power and strength for me.

So I tried a 19" High 5. This propeller allowed then engine to spin up to its power range almost immediatley. Needless to say I was able to pop up on my slalom much quicker. The High 5 also allowed for a 150 rpm increase in WOT. Max RPM went from 4,450 to 4,600 RPM. Top speed decreased by about 2 mph.

I have tried the High 5 on my 230 in the past. However this boat seems to be better balnanced and the 5.7 EFI seems to have much more bottom end ooomph than the 5.0 LX. So the performance difference is not so dramatic. Try a search on High 5 propellers and see what you come up with. Also, from what I have read, Merc's Enertia Prop is suppose to enhance all areas of performance. However, I have yet to see this propeller mated to a sterndrive.

OK, just ordered a Mercury Revolution 4 SS prop. I decided to try a 17" pitch in this model as it is said you will loose some RPM's. After I install and test, I'll give ya an update.

Going from a 3 blade to a 2" smaller pitch 4 blade you may not change WOT RPM's much. The additional blade surface of the smaller pitch 4 blade will spin close to the same as a 3 blade of a higher pitch. But the size change you're doing is by rule of thumb, the right place to start. Hopefully you'll get better bite out of the hole, better acceleration and about the same top end speed if you're lucky.

Good luck and let us know how it "turns" out. :smt043
