What's the best knife to have on board...????

A serrated knife. If you need it, you're going to want a knife to work fast - not necessarily neatly (like a straight blade). If you keep up on the sharpening though - and are good at it - a straight blade can do quite well. A razor knife (Home Depot) is good to have, too.

Below is the one I have, but it's really overkill for most jobs. However, I have found it convenient on more than one occasion when I need to dive. I have the older, hard case for it. I actually prefer that since the knife "snaps" into the case (in addition to a locking strap). I bought this one on the recommendation of an ex-Seal. The one he has (and carried) is the big brother to this one (I couldn't see the need for a 12" knife).

A folding (locking) knife is a great idea.

Find one that is well made, fits your hand comfortably and feels secure in your hand - especially when wet.

I should add that the "best" one will be the one that feels the best to you and you are comfortable in using. When I picked up that knife for the first time (went to Cabela's so I could touch and feel them) it just felt right in my hand. I went to specifically to see that one, but I looked at a bunch of others, as well.

I have a sailor's knife from A. G. Russel. It has a marlin spike and a serrated blade and bone scales (handle). The spike is good for getting knots out of lines. I also keep another knife for cutting cheese or fruit, spreading stuff on crackers, etc. A third little knife is for fishing. I'm a knife collector so I have a knife for everything.
