Just learned something new yesterday. Started to do an oil change on my stbd engine but the reverso pump wasn't sucking oil. Took the end cover off and found that there was a small rubber impeller which had four broken blades.

Research revealed that there are actually recommendations that suggest replacing this impeller every year! (A bit much I think) but nevertheless, something to be aware of. It never occurred to me that this was even a maintenance item. My last boat had a reverso pump which I used for eleven years and never had any issues with. I guess it was just luck.

Yes, an important item to have in your spares box.

Part number is SRK 360 if you have the op 6 or 700 series. Comes with the gasket too.

Oh thanks. I was trying to identify the part number as there's no model number on the pump. I thought it might be an OP4 or OP6 which take p/n 360014 or 38-2314. I was going to take a look at a replacement impeller before ordering.

Getting ready to change the oil in my cats, where do you guys pick these up? Amazon has what looks like the right impeller, but I'm not sure.

It’s worth having a spare for because if it craps out in the middle of an oil change, in most applications, you won’t be able to finish changing the oil.
Also good insurance as I have a spare and have never had to use it. As far as I know, mines original. I’ve had the boat 10 years.

on my second boat with a reverso - never knew there was an impeller to change. Learn something new every day.

I would think the impeller would be well lubed...

I'm curious whether anyone has experience with the impeller on the OP-7 lasting longer than the OP-6? The impeller on my 25-year old OP-6 seems to fail every year, and it is a pain to replace it because of where the unit is located. I'm considering replacing it with an OP-7, in the hopes of the impeller lasting more than a year. I know the impeller is the same part, but maybe the units are different. Any real-world experience?

I switched the pump over to a Groco and it has ceramic vanes (replaceable) but they haven't gone bad in over 8yrs.

This is what was left of my impeller, and it explains why it wouldn't work on the port engine or generator.

It also got me wondering where the broken fins would go if I was pumping oil in instead of out. No fins were left in the pump.

The Reverso in my other boat sheared vanes every other year. What I found out is after use, turn the pump on in the direction of the next use so the impeller vanes are bent in the right direction to use it again. So, for example, after filling the engines, gears, and generator with oil - I run it for a very short period in "drain" to set the vanes in the direction to drain as that is how it will be used the next time. My theory is the vanes take a set and rapidly reversing them after a year or so shears them off.
On the boat I have now, I've yet to change the impeller since I changed it when I bought the boat six years ago and I'm hanging my hat on the method. Still, I have a couple of spares in the kit.....

You could be right Tom, as I said earlier, I’ve not changed mine in 10 years of owning the boat and I don’t use the reverso to pump oil in, only to pump it out so it only turns in one direction. I pour the oil in the top from 2 1/2 gallon jugs.

I do remember there was a different impeller for diesel engines. I don't remember the numbers.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Reverso. The impeller fails frequently, about every 3rd oil change. And it leaks oil. I always have 2 spare impellers on aboard. I was not aware there is an impeller specifically for diesels?

As I use mine to also fill, I like Tom's plan and will adopt if going forward. Thanks!

Reverso fuel transfer pumps use the same impeller so that's the only reason to use the one specifically made for diesel. It makes no difference when used for pumping oil.
