Has anyone had to return a mfd for bench testing? What exactly does that mean?

It means the display is tested in an electronics lab to determine if it is performing per spec. Insurance companies will sometimes ask for tests prior to paying a claim. If they do pay to replace a piece of equipment, they will attempt a repair and then try to resell the item as used equipment to recover some of their loss. Manufacturers may do the same thing for warranty work.

I am to return my eS98 to Raymarine. It no longer recognizes my Quantum and my camara. No one can seem to figure out why. Only thing that is working is my depth and my charts.

I unplugged it and put it down below when we were due to get high winds and driven rains from the last storm. That's when the radar bit the dust, then the Cam stopped this past Monday.

We had what we thought was a mfd failure that was new. Testing showed the display was fine but the transducer was damaged when lighting struck our near by flag pole. Flag pole was fine but the lightning protection on the pole back fed the boat which was also fine, but the through hull was sacrificed. Replaced the transducer and all was back to normal.

I went through all the steps with the Ray guys on the phone. One time the screen showed the Quantum, a few seconds later in no longer showed on the unit. The whole system is brand new, it just kinda stinks because my wife and I are leaving here in two weeks. She's never seen what the system can do. Now the system is down and she isn't gonna be very happy

Trouble shooting can be frustrating. When we replaced our electronics our tech spent a lot of time on the phone with support from Raymarine to complete the project. The steps are so precise that missing one small detail causes things not to work perfectly. There is a temptation to think you have missed some software set up step, but sometimes a key piece of equipment is faulty right out of the box. Once things work, they tend to be trouble free for years.
