Retrofit Air Conditioning on a '96 250?

Jim,
Good thought. Maybe I'll drive over this afternoon and ask them about it.

Well, finally got a price. 9000 BTU, unit and installation: $2278. I'm thinking that's not bad. And while the new 240s come with a 7000 BTU A/C, I am in South Florida, so the extra 2000 BTUs will probably be helpful. Any thoughts?

chazaroo,

Wow, if you can get the whole job done for that quote I would be signing up!
I also absolutely agree with you on the 9000 BTU unit. Believe me, you are not going to have a problem with over cooling. As I mentioned in an earlier post our 6500 unit is tearing it's guts out to stay up with it during the day when its 95 outside.
Good luck and be sure to give us a post installation update!

Cheers,

Jim

Will do Jim. Sounds like we're doing the right thing. I'll write something up as the install takes place.

Sounds like a great price, and even though it may be "slightly" oversized, I wouldn't hesitate, even a little bit.
Are you still here, reading this post? Why haven't you signed yet??? :smt043 :smt043 :smt043

My version of marine AC is an $89 Walmart 5000btu window unit that sits on the open cabin door top flap(slid open position) below the windshield on our 87 250DA. I modified the cold air outlet with styrofoam and duct tape so it gets a piece of 6" diameter flexible aluminum vent inserted that directs the cool air down into the cabin. A hood made of double sided mylar sound/heat insulation covers it on 3 sides and covers the gap between the bifold cabin door and the open sliding hatch that the AC unit sits on and allows the intake to draw the warm humid air out of the cabin. It can be stored under the space for your feet when you would convert the V berth to a dining table. Works fine for the few times per season we would be in a transcient marina and have access to shore power. My wife gave me the "redneck contraption look" the first time I brought it onboard but hated to leave the cool cabin in the morning.

chazaroo, just out of curiosity, do you know where they are proposing to install the A/C unit in your boat? I pulled up the owners manual for your boat in effort to get a feel for the layout of your cabin but there was not any layout, or floor plan info in it.
The only reason I ask is that since the install cost is so reasonable just make sure that the unit is installed in a way (And Place) that NO air from the hull liner can be pulled into the return air of your A/C system! And make sure that they are not going to just dump your condensation drain into the bilge.
Much earlier in this thread I posted a link for Mermaids install manual. If you haven't read through that you might want to sit down with a cold one and go through it just so you know all the right questions to ask before the installer starts bolting things down in your boat.

Cheers,

Jim
