Resurfaced Counter with Cherry Laminate

Great job! It looks like there are triplets on this forum now, You, me and Sundancer all have the same year and color scheme, although you have by far the best looking counter tops. Between your counter tops and some of the other guys' wood flooring, I will be busy all winter trying to catch up (lol).

Thanks. My next project is going to be to put down a new floor with a Teak pattern from Allure. It's a vynal plank product. Then new carpeting on the verticle walls of the cabin. We'll keep you posted.

Wow! I missed this thread because we were in the San Juans! NICE!! The Cetol makes the laminate look good! And it looks like your wife's undies are in the reflection of the mirror too!!

Jocomo, I just looked at the pic of the Allure install, looks nice. How much work was it to get the old carpet off and did you have to sand it after scraping off the backing? Is the floor glassed over plywood? Was it level enough or did you have to lay any glass or filler to even it out? Were you able to slip the flooring under the cabinets and are you going to use any quarter round or molding to finish off the edges at the cabinets? How are you handling the stair noses and the transition into the aft berth?
Sorry for the questions, but you are doing exactly what I want to do to our boat and those are the questions I keep asking myself. I've thought about leaving the carpet down as an underlayment and just installing the Allure right overtop.

Hi Scorpio,

I was able to pull the carpet up relatively easily. Underneath was fiberglass on top of plywood. It was pretty flat and level once I used a scraper to remove the glue remnants from the carpet. I didn't see any need to do any sanding or filling. Then I put down a layer of the foam underlayment to give it a little extra eveness, but i"m not sure even that was necessary. However I would'nt recommend putting the Allure over top of the Carpet. I think that might be too much cushioning and your floor would probably feel pretty soft as the allure is not rigid.

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do about finishing the edges. The allure goes up to the cabinets and not underneath. I'm thinkging about using some sort of vinyl flexible tubing, but I might use 1/4 round if I get ambitious. Not sure what I'm going to do about the stairs yet. I might just fashion some risers out of solid wood. I'll keep posting as I move along. Hopefull now that summer is winding down I will get back to work on it.

Looks pretty durn good! I'm definitely doing this, but I've had the same question about the steps and the bullnose. I guess I could just take a 23x4 and whittle it down to cover the end and edge. I'm not sure what to do.

I have another question! What kind of fridge do you have? It's obviously not the original Norcold and fit nicely in the same place? I still have the original fridge, but it's starting to show it's age and I figure one with a nice Danforth compressor would be quieter and more energy efficient.

And while I'm here has anybody figured out a replacement hinge for the swinging cabinet doors? Mine continuously come undone and need to be adjusted. I guess I need to try some threadlock stuff? Do you guys have the same problems?

Which cabinet doors are you talking about? Do you mean the one under the sink? I don't have any problems with those. I have a problem with the cabin bifold door, the piano hinge has a rod running the entire length of the hinge. It works itself down and will stick out the bottom enough to gouge the threshold. I keep an eye on it and when I see it starting to poke out the bottom, I beat it back up with a hammer. Still trying to figure a way to keep it in position.

All of my hinges except the bifold into the cabin! I already have the gouge! Actually, it was there from the previous owner! I've thought about epoxying a small washer to the top or even soldering one on to keep it from slipping down. I just check it once a month and push it back up if I need too.

The hinges on all of my doors are infinitely adjustable left or right to match up with the other door that is infinitely adjustable. There are one or two screws on each hinge that allow you to slide the door off the hinge. Those suckers keep coming undone!!

Only ever had the head vanity door pop off once when I was working on the sink in there. I just tightened up the screws good and its been fine since. So you are saying that in addition to coming off,the doors don't line up correctly?

The screws are always loose and I can't seem to get them tight enough. After some pounding, they loosen up and the doors droop! Maybe I need to grind some holes to hold the screws a little better?

Saw these steps the other day

I love the Allure product. I put some in my laundy room and thought of putting some in Saint Max. What color/pattern is yours. I have never seen that one and what I put down is too dark for the boat.

Don Sr, love those steps! I've thought about just using the old ones as a template and making a pair out of some plywood and prefinished hardwood flooring from a home center. Its going to be a long winter so I will think about this before I start ripping and tearing.
