I am considering repowering a 1974 240 SRV with OMC 225 HP Stringer system. I have learned that this requires reglassing the transom to strengthen it, particularly if I go to a Mercruiser. Have any of the vintage Sea Ray owners gone through this process and can you give me any advice? I cannot imagine these 34-year-old stringer systems lasting much longer. Thanks, Seacure

I dont know much about Mercruiser, I am updating my 1977 240sdb to an 85 OMC 800, 235 hp. Parts seem to still be easily obtainable. I also gain the power trim. My Transom is bad on the port side where the steering lever passes through(internal steering on the new drive, thus I will perm fix this leak), and will be replacing the lower half of it as a result.(NOT a project for the faint hearted, I've done this before) I cant afford to go MERC, but would Love to go that way when I replace it. On my retirement, I have to shop price. My location has a ton of boats that have sat for 2 or more years, thus needing repairs a lot of owners arent willing to shell out for, making it easy to pick a complete boat up for a reasonable price(Usually under $200), just to strip for its drive. So far in 2 years I have dismantled 6 OMC, and 1 Merc. Unfortunately at the time I couldnt use it, so it was sold(BIG mistake)
