Anyone know a good supplier for just memory foam or another type of harder foam? I want to replace the queen size(well kinda its a little short) in my aft cabin along with the 2 bunk style up fwd. If I could just get the foam and cut it to size myself, wrap it with an older sheet and staple that down to the wood. Then put normal bedding over that I think I would be pretty happy. These custom made mattress seem a little ridicules. Any and all other suggestions are always great, thanks guys.

I bought my mattress at IKEA and cut it to size with an electric knife. Try to use latex rubber as it does not absorb moisture.

I'm currently debating buying one of the "overpriced" ones. Still debating whether its worth it or not but I've requested quotes from four suppliers that do custom foam mattresses. Certainly overpriced, but they'll also provide custom sheets etc. and an 8 or 9" custom mattress sounds particularly appealing after sleeping on my 4" 20 year old mattress for the past 9 months....

So far, I've gotten one quote back - $1850 and $299 for sheets. I requested a discount and they've offered 15% so far....

Another approached that worked for me if you're handy. I bought a regular queen size inner spring mattress for about $200 - $300 and took it apart, altered the shape to fit my forward V berth, and put it back together. It was a pain in the a$$ but it looks and feels like a custom big dollar mattress. I've played around with all kinds of foam but was never really happy until I did this. Mark

Hmm I kinda like this idea. Never tore into a spring mattress though. Is it a matter of cutting out the springs you don't need and sewing it all back together?

That's basically what I did. The mattress has a heavy stiff wire that forms the top and bottom edge that I reshaped to the size and the curves I needed. Then I removed and repositioned the springs accordingly and resewed the binding to fit the new shape. I put a zipper along the middle of the bottom and cut the bottom wire on each end so when I got it to the boat I could unzipper the bottom and fold the mattress in half to get it in the boat. At one point I thought trying to do this was a big mistake but I stuck with it and it turned out well. Actually didn't spend all that much time doing it. I would do it again if I had to. Good luck if you try it, Mark

Thank you Mark, I think I might even have an older mattress to give this a try on.

Great thread, because these uncomfortable sleeping systems do matter.
I experimeted with inflatable "camping" mattresses. They come in queen and single sized. You can store them easily and inflate them easily on board with a little inflator that plugs in or attaches to a dc source. You just lay them on top of the existing mattress system (foam).
But getting the top "pointed" if you need that has eluded me so far. I tried a split pvc tube to roll it into, with clamps, to hold it pointed, but the mattress just unfulrled anyway.
I love the idea of a regular mattress cut like he said he did. Great idea.

We just got a 2" memory foam topper for our bed at home. I really like this thing, feels like a totally different bed. I'm thinking about getting one for the boat for next summer and cutting it to fit and covering with some sheets cut to fit.
BTW got the topper at BJ's (a wholesale club).

Well my mattress replacement has turned into fwd cabin replacement. The mildew smelling foam stuff is out and I started pulling out the the fabric on the walls. What a mess, going at it with a wire brush and some more elbow grease tomorrow.
I did the port windows today also, dropped one in the drink in the process. Was doing it hanging off of the deck and while reaching for the drill it slid out of the hole. Did what any navy man would do, grabbed a tank and spent the next 20 min in 50 degree water without a wetsuit. No avail though just learned the hard way not to do that again.

In regards with the mattress I am going to go with a foam topper. The two bunks are cut in two sections each. So the bottom has easy access to the AC unit.(Along with all this extra work I have taken on I don't want to tear apart a spring mattress just yet).

Well after about 6 hours with a wire brush I think I got the majority of that dang foam backing all out. Now its a matter of ordering new headliner material. Also going to cover up the old shelfs with some wood veneers. Then hopefully I can start on the mattress job.

Quick question for those of you have some experience with this foam backed fabric. Can I glue the new stuff over the old glue resin? I could take a sander to it all, but really I'm tired of dealing with it. Also I found an automotive foam back fabric and the marine type. Is there really much of a difference between the two? Other then 4-8 dollar difference and less colors on the marine side?
