Replacing manifolds/riser - sealant needed?

I just went through this on my boat. I searched the forum and a lot of people recommend sealant of different types for the riser/elbow gaskets. I was unable to locate any sealant around my area, so I called several Mercuiser dealers. They said to install the Merc gaskets dry with no sealant. So this is what I did and so far so good. Again this is with the factory "silver" gaskets, not aftermarket. Both mechanics I spoke with said it is not recommended, and they do not use it.

I only use Merc's Silver Gaskets and Torque appropriately and they haven't Failed. Al W.
