Replacing canvas-Original color or new?

Just looking to get some opinions here. I'm ordering a replacement canvas from Great Lakes and can't decide to keep the original tan color or replace it with black. I know there are other threads on this topic, but I'm not worried about the heat, just what would look best. Thanks.
Just purchased a '98 310 Dancer. Looking at new canvas also, was wanting to know more about the 25% off at Great Lakes. I requested and quote, the sent, but did not mention anything about 25% off...

Where is a good place to get replacement canvas. My boat still has original. It is useles. My bimini top frame is good. Canvas is torn bad and brittle. Do I need to get the place that makes canvas the boat or do they have the measurements for the boat on file by make year and model?

Most good canvas guys will want you to bring the boat to them if you can and they will fit it to the boat.

. . .or if they are local, they will come to the boat.

But yeah. . .it apparently becomes a custom thing pretty quick.

Also. . I don't believe Great Lakes provides the snaps. . that is a DIY component to the job.

How's the white hold up to dirt/soot? You have any pix of your 420 with white canvas?

If you keep the top of your boat clean, white canvas holds up as well as any. We just hose ours off with clean water and it stays very fresh looking. It is LOTs cooler. We keep it up in the morning with the sun on it and the A/C on and the back of the boat stays in the 70's with no heat build up. I don't believe we would be able to do that with black or grey canvas.

Nice boat you have there! Mine is all black now, even the cockpit cover.

I looked at GL vs. a local canvas shop. the big difference is that the local shop will install all the snaps and stand behind their work. You can also have the canvas modified to suit your needs. for example, I had my new cockpit cover installed with a zipper that goes all the way up to the cabin door. So If I have it all snapped in and forgot something, its just a zip away to get back in.

My Aft curtain was done about a year and a half ago by GL, and the zipper is giving me problems already.

That would be fine by me, but their website only has canvas for boats to 1993. Sent em a quote request. I'll see what comes of it.

OK. I am about to commit to the custom route.

A bit educational shopping.

Got four bids

Bid One: Decent guy. Came to house took measurments, emailed a quote that night breaking out labor and materials.

Bid Two: Had a shop. Took one look at old canvas, quoted 1.3x first guy without blinking or taking any measurements. No written quote.

Bid Three: Came to house. Took measurments. . had a visible pause when I mentioned "Tanera thread" as if he wasn't planning to provide it unless I demanded it. Written quote on spot with no breakout. Came in at 1.3x first guy.

Bid four: Decent guy. Came to house, took measurements, brought book with photos of other jobs. Quoted slightly more scope than other guys. Emailed a detailed quote. Cost: 1.5x first guy.

So I am throwing out bids two and three because of the professionalism aspects. First guy sounds OK, even ignoring the fact he is low cost.

Jitts; Do you have any canvas guys up where you are? There were over a dozen down where the boat is in NJ. I would not expect that where you are, so you probably have fewer options. How close are you to Lake Wallenpaupak (SIC)? They probably have a few canvas guys down there.

Great Lakes can provide the whole top from mounts on up, fabric, snaps, pre-bent bows etc.
