I am wondering what I should budget for replacing the canvas on a 1987 340 Sundancer, I will be replacing as is design, which is a slant back for rear from the arch with (2) windows and screening and only (2) pieces of windows on the side windows up front. No camper back or stand up clear isinglass at the windshield.

Just curious if this is a $3,000 or less job. It will be done over this winter in inside storage.

Located in Wisconsin

Thanks

I can't tell if you plan to DIY or have it made. I can tell you that if you want to have it made GreatLakesBoatTop does very nice work. I have a 340 cockpit cover and slant back made by them and they're both excellent.

Btw, congrats on your Badgers putting a beatdown on the Huskers. I sure didn't see that coming. I'm a Buckeye so our 12-0 season went for nought. However, next year...

Look around for a good canvas man, and I'll bet that you can do it for around your figure.

While you're at it why don't you consider having the bimini raised with forward windscreens. Much better headroom and visibility. Also much better resale. When I bought my 390 Express 2 years ago it was a must have consideration for me.

The quote to replace as is from a reputable canvas shop is $5,200.00, another $2,000.00 to raise the bimini in front.

Makes me want to replace as is but that raised bimini is certainly the way to go.

Go Bucky at the Rose Bowl with interim coach Barry Alvarez - he is sort of legend in these parts - good and bad.

$7200 sounds a bit rich to me. I'd keep shopping. Should be more like 5k. :wow:

Thanks for the input - I am looking for another price it just seems high.

Thank You

+1 on that being too high.

I agree.

Make your own! It's not really that big of a deal. Old bed sheets work great for making the patterns. Then buy the materials, trace the patterns, cut them and pin the zippers in place. Most canvas places will sew everything up for you for pretty cheap if everything is already done and pinned in place. Installing the snaps is easy once you hang the new canvasses.

I made my own drop curtain last year and this year I'm making an aft curtain.

Hi Laramar....can you send me some pics of your camper canvas? I am looking to get a camper canvas asap. Thanks.

I ended up spending $5,200 for a direct replacement top no alterations to tubing or layout with the addition of a new screen door for the entry to cabin.
Not done yet Boat Tailors is the contractor out of Racine WI.
Other boats in my storage space have had them do work and it looks top notch.
Excited to see the finished product.

Just received my first quote for full enclosure using PolyCarbonate up front, Strataglass in the rear, full camper with all windows and screens. $6200. A couple of distinctions I have found is how they sew in the glass. My understanding is that creating pockets for the glass is better than having the glass come to the edge, this is easier to do since there measurements can be off a little and it doesnt matter, also a cheaper way to build it. When the glass comes all the way to the edge it makes it very difficult to re install because the panel is so stiff. All new SS frame as well.

I have canvas from the person you got the quote from in New Buffalo, it's the best work anywhere round. I did the poly on my aft deck and it still looks perfect 3 years later.

Are you using Andy?

BMMK - good pick with Boat Taylors - they have done the all the canvas work on our 310/330 and it is all very well done. They are a bit more expensive that others, but you clearly get what you pay for.

Hi bmmk
There was a post in Pictures & Video by Captain Don of his 1988 340DA "My Mary Ann" canvas. 12/07/2008
I liked his camper top and printed the pics for my files. I'm glad I have the pics because going back to his post it no longer has the pics in it.
I'm sure if you message Captain Don , he could repost his camper top pics.

Carver370, yes it is Andy's quote, did you give me his name, thank you if it was. He is very knowledgeable and wants to make sure it's a quality job. Im impressed.
