- 260 Mercruiser w/ MR Upper and R Lower
Hello Everyone I recently had my Mercruiser MR drive upper leak oil and blow the upper gear set, and I mean there were only like 4 teeth left haha.
So I am looking at a lower cost option of replacing the drive.
My friend had an old drive laying around in his backyard which needed re-sealed.
I bought a reseal kit and began taking the drive apart, only to find that the upper of the drive I was going to reseal will not mate to my current lower. This would mean that the new drive I got to reseal would NOT be an R MR or Alpha One drive.
In my research I have found that this drive has the 8 spline vertical shaft which is not compatible with the newer drives.
So my questions are:
1) Can I reseal the upper and lower of this pre 1974 drive with the 'R' drive kit?
2) Will this drive even be worth rebuilding or should I scrap it and begin looking for an Alpha one upper unit.
3) How do I tell if the drive is the 8 spline shaft or 13 spline shaft when going to purchase a new drive? They seem to look cosmetically the same on the outside.
