I know many of you have done the same. My story:
I went down to the boat last weekend (we keep our 2004 Sundeck 220 on a lift at our personal dock) and the boat wouldn't start without giving it some gas. Strange, but not the end of the world. Then realized that it wouldn't idle at all. Had several people at the house and we were hungry so we still managed to take it to get some food at a nearby marina. Boat ran fine at any speed other than idle but parking was a real pain (because of the idle issue). I did get the two intermittent beeps, but all gauges were fine (temp, water pressure etc.) and the smartcraft was not showing an error on screen. Got back to the dock and came here for a search of similar issues. Learned all about the IAC and how to replace. I ordered the parts and followed the steps here:

Boat started right up at idle and no more beeps. I share this story for two reasons, I want to concur with others that this is a VERY easy fix. It literally took me longer to find the right size allen wrench in my toolbox then the rest of the job took (I did not do the flame arrester clean suggested in the post, but I did change out the IAC muffler. The second reason I wanted to share was that the IAC that I replaced was an original one (still painted black) and this was on a 2004 with approx 460 hours. I'd say I got my money's worth on that one!!

Glad this did the trick! I did one just last Tuesday, I had to remove my throttle body, but it went very easy. I agree, it takes longer finding the tools than replacing the darned IAC! Matt, Hifirush

Did both of mine a little while back (4.3 MPIs). One engine not idling well and getting the dreaded two beeps/minute alarm. Used Standard Motor Products AC423 (a direct cross reference from the Mercruiser part number). $35 each on Amazon and working like a champ!

I keep reading that using an automotive IAC on a marine engine can mess things up. Wrong voltage, etc. Has anyone been using an auto IAC on a Mercruiser for any length of time without problems?

google "iac automotive site:clubsearay.com" There are a lot of posts of folks using automotive IACs and having better reliability than the original. I am NOT a proponent of using auto parts on a boat for a number of reasons. The Standard Motor Products IACs I used have automotive applications BUT are a direct cross reference to the Merc part number. I gave them a thorough look over before using. Both motors are idling much better, do not die when docking, and have been running fine since May. If I run into a failure I will definitely post it here. I also carry a spare with me just in case, along with oil filters, serpentine belt, etc. The SMP cross reference is at: http://ecatalog.smpcorp.com/STD/#/searchparts/searchText/862998?type=x&search=s

I was nervous about using the automotive version, but not because I have any direct knowledge regarding the issue. Plus, the difference isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. If this was an annual change I would think harder about the alternative version. Considering I got 13 years out of the first one, I'm not too worried about the extra $40.

Same Symptoms, 6.2 MPI MX, port engine. 670 hours. Bought (marine) IAC. Still in the box. Guess I'll go install now. Used up all my energy completely disassembling Vacu-flush pump to replace all 4 duck bill valves. Really sucks now! (and holds vacuum for ever! maybe..)
