Old thread....but I had to cut my rope last weekend. I had a diver retrieve my anchor and chain, so I need to splice the rope and chain.
Henry....you seem to speak from 1st hand knowledge....so I have a question. Some if the sites/videos say to reduce the 3 strands by 1/3 after 2 or 3 tucks....and then maybe reduce again after a few more tucks Other videos I have watced make no mention of reducing the strands. What is the purpose of reducing he strands? And is it necessary?
The purpose of the taper is to allow the rope to feed through the gypsy smoothly and not jamb. Obviously if someone is making up an anchor rode that will not be used on a windlass then the taper is not needed.
As I suggested in my earlier post get a short bit of chain and a short piece of rope to practice on. Working with a 100' or more of rope can be cumbersome, as is working with the full anchor chain. I find it is easier to secure the chain to something so that it does not flop around. I use an old phillips head screwdriver that I put through the chain and then lock the screwdriver in my bench vise so the the chain is sandwiched between the handle and the vise.
Practice a few times doing a non tapered splice. Once you get the hang of that, start doing a taper (on the practice chain). The instructions call for ⅓ and ⅓, these don't have to be exact, just close to a ⅓.
If this is all you plan to do, you probably don't need a fid set. On the other hand if you want to try reworking your old dock lines, or try working with braided line you will need them.
