My tach is jumpy; it will move from 3K to 4K and back (quickly) with no change in engine sound, or it will jump to 3400 or 4000 when the engine, from experience, is making the sound I know means its down in the 2K range (if I tap hard on the glass, the needle will drop). I assume this means my 6-yr-old gauge is faulty? If so, any pointers on a line of gauges that look like the originals? Any suggestions appreciated.

search the site there is many posts about this.

Often jumpy or errant tachs and be fixed just by moving the swith on the back up and down a few times. Most tacks are built with a switch for the number of cyclinders on the engine 4, 6, or 8. The switch tends to get a little corrosion on it and moving it up and down gets this off.

Give it try it's cheaper than a new gauge.

Glad I saw this, have had my boat about 2 months and the tack is always erratic, usually stays pegged all the way at 6K, and I know my engine ain't turning that - when I uncover it for tomorrow's outing I will have to try flicking that switch on the back some.
