2012 470-DA, w/ Raymarine 48" HD radar (failed), wondering if I can replace it with a closed array radar such as RD424HD?? Supposed to be directly compatible with the E120W displays. However, mounting holes are slightly different. Connector at pedestal is also different.
Thx, Doug

Yes, I agree, but I can obtain a closed array for around $500 used and the cheapest open array replacement is 4500. I can get a used one for around 2200.

There have been threads where people are selling Raymarine gear from that generation for very reasonable prices. You might search back and see if any is still available. You might also check MarineMax electronics to see if they have an open array of that generation.

Ultimately it is your boat, but if I saw a nice boat like that with an old cheap closed array, I would wonder where else they are cutting corners.

Yea well, my wife did say she saw moths fly out of my wallet
Open it up and let them all fly away. Spring for the open array so your boat looks like a million bucks.

Guys, I dont care what it looks like. I only need radar for close in imaging, maybe 3 times a year. Anyways, the cost of the adapter plate for the closed array HD Digital is enough to make me just replace it. Its a racket. I can only get estimates for replacing the whole system, no longer supported, you definitely want new, blah, blah blah. Told I had to have new displays. because the buttons were rotted out and Raymarine no longer supports or produces the parts, blah, blah, blah. Got new dials and power buttons at id3gear https://www.i3dgear.com/online-stor...C-and-E-Series-Widescreen-Displays-p133778001 couple of hundred bucks. . So far, saved me about $40k on replacing everything. Just because its a million dollar boat, doesnt mean I have to be stupid.

Good on you! It seems like the common conception is that people with money should spend it. Alot of folks with significant liquid assets have them because they are careful about what they spend it on. I have had both radar styles and they all gave me the data I needed when I needed it. Most of us never really even need one, we keep them installed and working because we are conditioned to do so. I would venture to guess that most boaters don't know what they are looking at anyway and just don't venture out if conditions mandate use of radar. In the end it just boils down to personal choice and vanity.
Carpe Diem

Back when I had the original Ray equipment I had to replace the scanner not once but twice; it ended up being a problem with the cable to the scanner but I tripped across Max Marine Electronics in S. Florida. They specialize in tested and working obsolete electronics. Check them out and give them a call - https://maxmarineelectronics.com/shop/

I second Max marine, I have bought several things from them and they have great tech support also.

My buddy has the Quantum Radar with Doppler.... It is awesome for south florida having your own weather station on your boat is cool as Chit.

Yea, looked at that option, Quantum evidently is not backwards compatible.

I third Max Marine. I’ve bought used stuff from them several time and sent my buddies over to them. They’ll also likely give you a trade-in amount in your current radar.

I'm a big fan of the Quantum 2 Doppler as it will see objects right at the nose of your boat making it the right tool for the occasion you need up close and personal (I think it can detect objects at 18') I can detect small can buoys that are 12" in diameter maybe 2' high at the entrance to my marina. Big help in the dark.

As has been pointed out, the newer radars require new MFDs, and they isn't cheap. However, a new MFD and radar with a self install is in the $3k-$4k range, especially buying used. 12" Axiom just popped up on here today for $1700. I sold off the working parts of my old system and it paid for about 1/2 of the new stuff, so it can be done rather economically. MaxMarine might even buy some of it.

If your looking for in close navigation, the new domes are great tools, and will out perform your current OA. They will do things that generation of electronics didn't even conceive of. If you venturing far offshore and looking for birds to fish under, the an open array might make sense if you can swing the $6k-$10k.

I have seen some mid sized boats with closed array. Based on your statements of only needing 3 times a year, it's a no brainer. Now someone buying your boat might want to discount as it is not really the correct tool for the type of boat you have, but that's down the road me who knows what prices will be then.
My buddy has raymarine HD closed and I have Garmin HD open. I can tell you I pick up crab pots and PVC channel markers (privately owned channels) where he cannot. I don't think Garmin is any better, but this is more of a difference in open vs. closed arrays. I also travel in rain and night, so for me it is about the target acquisition and separation, so it's all about beam width.

The new solid state radars have a much sampler minimum range or “blind spot” where as any magnetron can have a substantial one. That’s what’s so impressive about them, and allows very small objects like crap pot buoys, and even logs floating in the water to be picked up.

Garmin and now Raymarine have solid state radar available in open and closed arrays, but the prices are eye watering! Basically, you have a 18”, or 24” (Garmin)array in the closed arrays, and 36”-72” in the open arrays and can buy the size that make sense for your boat.

The maximum practical range of any of these radars is limited to about 6-10 miles anyway.

I run Quantum 2 and a buddy has Garmin Fantom. Both can separate 2 wave runners easily out to about a 3 mile range. My old 4’ open array couldn’t do that.
