Two questions:
I would like to rename my boat. I realize I have to appease the gods with the proper ceremony (I understand alcohol is typically involved, or I have to back over the equator, or get my ear pierced or something), what about all my paperwork which reflects the current name - it's listed on my purchase documents. Do I have to re-register that too?

What is the rule of thumb for the location on the stern of the boat. Does that typically reflect where the boat is docked, or where the owner lives, or does it really matter.

Currently sitting in Gaithersburg, Maryland with 6" of new snow on the ground with much more to come....

When we bought our boat last month the name beforehand was taken off before the sale, and we were asked what name we wanted painted on the transom .thats all we had to do.....

We choose not to put where location is.....

Hopefully I haven't offended the Sea and Wind gods since I removed the decals with the former name and location off the boat over a month ago with a heat gun. There was no reference to the old name on any of the documents or writing on any of the manual so I might be ok on that account.

The only concern is if the previous owner filed for a MMSI number and programmed it into the VHF radio. He would have had to record the former name there. I will have to check the radio to see if there is a MMSI number recorded, if not I am home free and safe from lighting strikes and torpedo attacks.

The new name has yet to be visibly revealed to anyone so I am covered on that issue.

I have a picture of the transom with the old name and city on that which can be burned as part of the purging cerimony so the only thing left is the champagne...:smt038

MMSI # has the PO info on it and you will need your own #. hopefully the radio will accept a new #. most require a trip to the factory for a reset.

I am not sure without checking the radio if the PO actually had one but I remember reading in the manual that it was not a simple delete if one has already been entered. Of course, so as not to displease the gods I could simple put a new VHF radio in as part of the purging ceremony!!:smt043

When I was re-naming I saw the same web page as JEDI...
The important things to remember for the superstitious are;
-Remove the old name from ALL prev. documents
-Pour some champange over the decks and bow and say a few inspiring words.

For city/ state naming it's pretty much whatever you want.
Mine is not C.G. documented so I don't know about that but....
I registered in AZ- my hull ID # is AZ. Live in CA. And list my city and state on the back as CA.
For ours the hull ID is all they care about the rest is carte blanche

From a practical standpoint, you want to find a name that is not confusing to the Coasties in case you are in distress.

Legend has it that all traces of the old name must be removed ( labeled vests, etc.) and alchohaol must be involved!

Renaming a boat is a very serious undertaking, and should not be taken lightly.

However, it is a great opportunity to invite over many of your friends, through a party, and re-christen her properly.

Here is the ceremony that I used:
http://www.bluewatersailing.com/documents/renamingceremony.pdf

Note, this ceremony is for a sailing boat, so you will need to make a couple of very minor changes.

However, this ceremony does involve quite a bit of alcohol, and when you rename your boat, this is the time to prove to your boat how dedicated you are to her....so, no buying any of the cheap stuff!

Really, have fun with it and do it properly!!!!

we renamed our boat with friends and family, we followed the ceremony step by step (just in case,,,)i have read horror stories that if you messed up one step then you have to start over. this is the link i used good luck and congrats! boat safe.com(nautical know how)

Here is a little twist to this, what if you have purchased a pre-owned boat but the boat was never named in the first place. My wife and I are going to name it this spring after our daughter and want to make sure its done properly. I am more than happy to have a "get together" including food and many many beverages but what about the actualy ceremony itself, does it need to vary from what has been posted here or do the same rules apply?

Good point, better safe than sorry when it comes to a stripper.
