Hi there, I'm having overheating problems and need to get to the impeller housing but i'm having difficulties removing lower gear case. I've followed the steps from a site on the net, removed all four screws from the trim, un done the nut that comes through the anode, is there something i'm missing??

Whats the best way to remove the housing?? I want to give it a whack but not sure that i'll damage something internally.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It's simple. The lower unit has three studs that attach it to the upper with nuts. There are two studs in the upper unit that are secured with nuts recessed into the anti-cavitation plate. (look up!) Having removed the nuts, you're most of the way there. The last fastener is the screw under the anode.

You've removed these all but some drives get frozen in place. You may want to pry it off with a screwdrivers or knock it free, but that's unnecessary. When I had this problem, way, way back in 1988, I went back to my car to call the dealer. (Cell phones weren't that portable in those days.) Unfortunately, when I walked away, some f#$%ing idiot who was "offering helpful suggestions" decided to attack the drive with screwdrivers and damaged the housing slightly. He wasn't there when I got back otherwise I would have used the damn screwdrivers on him.

Anyway what the dealer said to do is to thread the two nuts that are on the sides of the drive without the washers. Since they fit in a recess, you can put the washers on the top of the nuts. Now when you screw the nuts with your wrench, the nuts press the washers against the top of the recess. This forces the stud (and lower unit) down and away from the upper unit. Remember to do both sides equally, one turn on the port side and one turn on the starboard side, then repeat until freed.

Best regards,
Frank C

I'm not sure you have removed all the bolts.
There are two on each side and one in the front behind the anode and one in the rear, under the anode.
I believe there are six bolts in total.
