I have interior carpeting in a 340 Sundancer that I would like to replace. How much of a hasle is it to get the old carpet out. It looks like they built everything on top of the carpet (fridge, cabinets sink etc) and I might have to get all of that out of the way.

Do some searches. People have done it - but it is VERY hard to get up. The glue is apparantly VERY well bonded - and you end up basicall scraping it all up. It doesn't seem to tear up in sections or chunks.

I've not tried it - but I have basically the same boat as you - and at a glance it does not look like an easy job.

It is a big job, but the difficulty isn't as much with removing stuff to access it as it is how Sea Ray installs the carpet. The carpet in my boat was glued down very well. It took 2 guys with hand held scrapers 2+ days to just get the old carpet out. The largest piece of carpet was about thumb-nail size which means you can't just grab and pull....you scrape every inch.

Other challenges for us were the number of pieces of trim that needed to be removed and the number of floor hatches that required recovering. I don't think you will have as many on a 340DA as we did on the 450, but don't overlook that each carpet covered trim piece must be cleaned and re-carpeted. Some of the interior components that are not carpeted will also have to be removed and properly re-installed. In my case the aft berth had natural oak supports and tracks that required drilling out plugs, then reinstallation involved gluing in new plugs, cutting them flush and refinishing the oak in place.

My point is to look carefully at the job ahead because Sea Ray makes it a lot bigger job that just "rip out the old and glue in the new." We chose to hire a carpet layer with yacht experience and it cost about 2X what laying carpet usually does, but the finished product made it certainly money will spent.

Thanks Jeff and Frank. I suspected that it would be a nightmare but hopeful that I was wrong. Is there something that can be put over carpeting like teak? Thanks.

Don.

I had a 460 re carpeted and it took the installer 2 hours to remove the old carpet there definetly is secret to removing the old carpet

If you don't mind me asking, who did your carpet for you.

Thanks
