I was just advised that possibly due to a past overheating event the clutches on my port transmission have worn. I'm looking at replacement some time in the future - hopefully later than sooner. When it is time do I have to remove the engine and transmission as a unit or can they be separated and the transmission removed by itself?

1990 SeaRay 420DA with Cat 3208TA power.

Thanks!

If you are a member of Boatdiesel.com, I would put that question out there. I am also curious about this. To me it looks like it all comes out together, but would like to hear from someone who has had this done on our boat.

Mechanically you can……….physically maybe not. You have to have enough room to jack up the back of the engine and a way to lift the transmission from above, then you need enough room in front of the transmission to pull the transmission out of the engine coupler and to remove the shaft coupler from the end of the shaft……..that can be 4"-6". You can get a good feel for this if you look at your engine room with a tape measure.

Removing the transmission only is a worthwhile goal because removing the engine and transmission together will require removing the cockpit upholstery and the cockpit deck which is time consuming and labor intensive.

Thanks Frank! Have a safe and enjoyable boating season...

There is hope! I was visited by a ZF repair facility today and they reviewed the situation. They think they will be able to remove the trans without having to remove the cockpit deck. They will bring in an A-frame and brace it to the stringers. They think they can break the trans apart well enough to remove it through the hatch. Then we have to move the boat to the marina's pad so they can maneuver a forklift close enough to take the trans off of the A-frame and load it into the truck.

As we progress I will post updates.

Steveadill,
How do you know the transmission is bad?, it does not work anymore or was a result of a Oil Test report Mede on the Transmission, I have a friend with a similar problem

Sorry about going dark on this thread. Trans is out, didn't need to remove the sole! As I suspected, the A-frame was sufficient to raise the trans out. It was first separated from the extension at the back of the engine - in a car it would be called the bellhousing - and then lifted straight up and out.

Then the fun began - you can read it here: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/77693-ZF-IRM301-failed-fix-seems-crazy
