I know it's possible but how without damaging the vitricor in the salon.
There are two screws hidden under the molding which trims around the cherry finish.
Solution????

Gently pry the cushioned white trim and gold border down using a thin blade protected with a cloth. You can do it only in the area just below the TV as it is a little flexible. It will loosen a couple of christmas tree type fasteners and you will be able to see the two countersunk screws which hold the black TV backing board in place (attached to the bottom of the TV. Once these screws are out the TV and black board will come out through the opening.

Thanks much Fynder. I guess we have the same boat. Did you replace yours with a flat screen? I was thinking of installing an extendable mount for the flat screen and use the opening for storage. Possible??

I removed the TV and made a door the exact shape of the old opening with black Starboard and used a strip of Starboard as a door stop inside. The door is mounted on heavy duty "out and up" hinges (Lee Valley Tools). I bolted a Toshiba TV/DVD combo directly to the door with felt pads to protect the cherry where it overlaps. Cabinet interior is now used for storage. Install looks good but the viewing quality does deteriorate as you move to a lower angle, this model was better than most I saw. I can take some pictures once I'm at the boat. I didn't want to use the retractable arm as it wouldn't remain stable and might cause damage in rough weather.

Sounds great. Would definately appreciate some pictures. Not familiar with out and up hinges. I'm guessing it means you pull out and rotate up. Maybe the pictures will explain better. Thanks a bunch.

Sorry for the long delay but finally got photos and thought that this may apply to others with the old recessed Panasonic TV's.
I removed the old TV and made a door panel to fit the exact shape of the cut out with 1/2" black starboard.
Inside the bottom of the cut out I made a 2" black starboard door stop mounted from the inside. The door is mounted from the top using inset hinges as shown from Lee Valley Tools(175 degree inset hinges) The hinges are mounted to a black painted 2x4 inside the cabinet and are through bolted to the door with washers as Starboard will not hold screws. I drilled holes in the door for the power and cable connections. The TV is mounted to the door using the four standard machine screws that came with the TV and some washers; adhesive felt pads on the back protect the surrounding cherry finish. The cabinet is used for storage now.
The mounting system has help up very well in 4-5' seas for hours on end with no issue. We watch the TV only occasionally and have been happy with how it fits into the boat.
