It's the middle of the summer and all of the local marine mechanic are completely booked, so I'm considering replacing the leaking remote oil filter hoses myself. I changed one last year, but there's so little room to work under the engine where the hoses attach to the block, I don't know how I was able to do it.

I'm just wondering if there's anyone here who has done this job and can offer any tips for getting these things changed. I'm assuming I'll need to remove some things, like maybe the transmission cooler lines, to get better access, but if there's anything anyone could share to help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I did my 290 2 years ago and pulled the entire exhaust out (we had IO's) and it made it quite a bit easier. Still blind, but with a set of crows feet wrenches and some extensions I got it done.

blow or clean the oil lines out with something before you install them. A friend of mine installed two new sets of remote filter lines and they somehow had shavings or debris inside and it destroyed the rod bearings on his otherwise perfect big block MPI's

Ok, good advice, thanks!

I did mine last year.
I didn't remove anything else.
It's not and easy job.
Starboard was a PITA too close to fuel tank.
Stubby and offset wrenches make the job easier.
You have to be careful not to loosen up the oil filter adaptor fitting that one of the lines connects to.

You should remove the block adapter too. The gasket under it is rubber and another source of leaking, the bolt holding it on has a rubber o-ring, also another potential area to leak. If you can reach back, only 1 bolt to loosen and you can bring the lines and adaptor forward. Easier then to change the lines and put the whole thing back and have to worry about tightening only the adapter bolt while stretched out in the engine bay.
