I just received word tonight that one of my dockmates is missing and presumed to have fallen overboard sometime Thursday. He was an older single fellow that spent alot of his time working on other people's boats. It's believed that he fell in and possibly hit his head, with the cold water temps and lack of people around the marina it could have happened quickly and gone unnoticed. I was there yesterday and saw his car in the parking lot, I walked the dock and saw that his boat was open but assumed he was inside working. Apparently the dockmaster noticed his car was still there this morning and the boat was still open. The police probed the area, brought in a dog and used an underwater camera but have not found anything yet. We are all hoping that this is not the case and that he will turn up alive. His family and neighbors have not seen or heard from him in over 24 hours though.

So, everyone take that extra step to be sure that you are safe around the water during the winter months (and always). Accidents can happen quickly and since mosts marinas are like ghost towns over the winter you are most likely on your own. Coupled with the cold water temps an accident victim will not last long in the water.

Sorry to hear this sad news . This reminds me of my bug bomb ordeal that almost killed me :smt021. When i go to the boat now. I call my friends every hour if i don't !! Then they call the marina to have them find me. :smt001

Still nothing...I was at the marina yesterday and walked past his boat. There are muddy handprints on his platform and the boat's next to him like he attempted to get out. I guess his age, health and the shock of the cold water was just too much. I found out that he was 72 and was last seen on Wednesday so it must have happened that night or Thursday morning.

Very sad....72 really isn't that old! My thoughts are with his family..

The local newspaper today states the boater is still missing.
God bless the older boaters, but, older boaters must take more care while on their boats. The younger boaters must watch after the olders too.
Two weeks ago a very close friend, age 65,fell off his boat that is on the hard for the winter. We buried him last week. Just last week while shrinkwrapping, my boating friends and I looked across the harbor in shock. My slip neighbor (the last boat still in the water) was on his hardtop scrubbing it. He was the only one on the boat and he is 75 years old. When questioned about this later, he said it was a good time to clean the boat top since there was not any boats next to him. He said if he did fall off his boat top,it would just be in the water and he could swim to the dock. I think its time for him to wear an inflatable PFD. I think we should all keep a closer eye on our older boaters.

Yes, still have not found him. With the cold water temp, he may not be found until spring.

Sorry to hear about your friend, that is truly a shame. As a younger boater, I find myself hopping on and off more than I should when alone. Accidents can happen to anyone at anytime.

Its very sad.
This make me think of my parents. They keep a 37 MY on the Bohemia. I ask them not to wait until November to winterize but to start early in Oct to winterize out of fear that something like this could happen.

The news reports are conflicting saying that he was last seen on Thursday at 11:00 or 2:00. The eery part is that I walked past his boat around 3:30 that day.
