Remember the $32 Polk speaker sale

My 185 was a good little boat...gave me little trouble, even when I forgot to put the plug in once and went 8 miles out fishing....lemme tell you that was a white-knuckle ride back in! The marina manager was running out to give me sh!t for coming into the dock hot, until he saw me jump over the side with a wrench in my hand in 50F water...:smt021

I love my SR though. Going to the Toronto Boat Show on Sunday to see if I can convince my wife to upgrade again...

Can the stock Sea Ray speaker covers be put over the Polk DB 651's? I don't really want to have to put black speaker covers over off-white gel coat. I also don't care for women with big black moles on their face.

From my recollection, I would say no. The Clarion covers basically snapped to their speaker frame. The Polk covers screw to the speaker frame and as such the Polk frame is probably not fabricated with the recesses that the Clarion cover tabs seat into.

I had similar thoughts when changing mine out last spring. I will say that after 1 season of use, I have not had any issues with damage to the Polks. Also, the look of the open grills grows on you. Now, I think they look pretty "tough".

If you do a search, you will find also find a post where another CSR member actually painted them white. That looked real cool if you are really against the silver.

Just bought a pair of Polk DB 651 for $72 (with shipping) on e-bay. Tired of waiting for another sale. Seemed like a fair price.

My main concern is this, are they strong enough to withstand a three year old boy who loves to test items for durability? I can see the little man sticking my key chuck for the fuel tanks through the speaker. At least with the current crappy clairons, they are protected from little hands.

What say ye?

I say the 3 year old sees the woofers doing their thing, finds total interest in said displacement and rams the chuck right through them. :smt089

In that case it's best to let the "crappy" Clarions bring the tunes until the little ones find demolition a little less entertaining. (Can you tell that I have been there and done that) :smt001

I have the same concerns as you. First, are you sure they are Clarions? The 2003 spec sheet for my boat says Clarion speaker but they are actually Panasonics. I have looked over a lot of specs and manuals for better speakers and it looks like Rockford Fosgate 162C make the best replacement based on size and color. People have told me that I would be happy with the quality.

The Rockford manual shows 7.5" grill width which is the same as my Panasonics. The screw hole pattern may be off by 1/16".
