I want to do a compression test, but based on symptoms I think it’s more likely the trigger or switch boxes. In regard to this, all the compression testers I can find have very short leads and I will be single handing these test following the service manual instructions.

Any recommendations for a remote start switch compatible with an outboard. Longest lead I can find is 6’. All the units I googled say automotive. A few in the Q&A or FAQ say not suitable for outboards. I’m just trying to bump the flywheel with plugs out and fuel line disconnected at the cowl. Any suggestions? I have a 1994 mercury V-135 Blackmax with the 40A stator, (2) 20A voltage regulators. Wiring diagram shows switch box inner/1 is cylinders 1-3-5. 1 &3 are completely unburned, 5 is Fouled. New plugs, wires and coils. Thinking trigger is going, took out switch box. Oddly, VR upper/1 gave up tach signal but doesn’t look melted, tach worked switching to VR 2, replaced VR1 which worked on tach dueinf 1 outting, no readings the next test run. Battery still reading 14A or so when running.

also found a decently priced leak down tester, wondering if my portable compressor would be sufficient. I’ve never had it over 80psi and did not see online instructions for the model tester I was perusing. This is data I don’t specially need right now but would be good to have. Outboard mechanics for “vintage” 1994 2-strokes are becoming rarer in my area. Sea Ray dealer won’t look at anything prior to 2014, several old timers retired and the one guy I found isn’t taking any more work due to a recent baby.

thanks in advance.

Just flip your "kill switch" to "off" and use the key switch. You only need to walk a few feet from the helm to the engine to check the compression gauge and move it to the next cylinder :)

I do not have a kill switch equipped. Access to the outboard from inside the boat is blind and laying across the flywheel and hot powerhead to access the plugs.

Anyways... Nevermind. Exercise would be good for me.
