Does anyone recognize the boat in this craigslist ad ??

http://norfolk.craigslist.org/boa/1612838670.html

It looks identical to the SRV240 hardtop I sold last year, but the ad says it is 28' long. Of course to complicate things the Sea Ray archives do not indicate a 28' boat in 1979.

With a big block and a Bravo I it might be a great project for someone.

Sure looks like a 240cc hard top to me. As you say, documentation is spotty on these old boats, so you would need to see if the manufacture placard is still in place to have a better idea of what you are really dealing with.

My neighbor across the lake has a boat called the becky j. It's a 1979 26' SR with a hardtop. Looks like the same boat. Nice deep v hull and the perfect length for fishing on a rough lake michigan.

It isn't a 240; I have seen it from the road and it is too big, much bigger than my 240.

Sea Ray did make a 26' in 1979, I have been buying Sea Rays since 1976 and never heard of a 28', until later years. I will say I have never seen so much misinformation about a boats length than I do now a days. I would bet you are looking at what Sea Ray built as a 260 or 26' boat, 8' beam.

I agree; I think it is a 26 too. Wish it had more beam.Does it have an engine box, or is the cockpit sole flat ? The biggest thing I disliked about my 24' was the box.

Flat sole. You could get twin 260 HP V8s, twin 140s ( I think), but a single 260 HP was most common around here. The twin V8s made the boat sit a little low in the water but it was a nice ride and quick out of the hole.

The ad seems to indicate that it is one engine [which needs replacing] so this may be exactly what i am looking for.
Any idea whether a big block would fit ?
If so, could I put a Bravo I on a 1979 transom assembly ?

Don't know if a big block would fit. Mine had a 350 CU Merc and it was no slouch. We cruised at 3050 rpms and that was about 22 MPH. It was easy to get up on plane with 4 adults although like all deep V boats in this size, it will lean into the wind and requires constant trim tab adjustments when people move around the cock pit. On an extended cruise, you could pretty much trim it up and it was great through the water until you did a course change and then you needed to adjust the trim to the new conditions. For its size, this is a good seaboat.

Thanks, sbw1.
It sounds like it would handle just like my 240 hardtop, but with more deck space. I am surprised this boat is 2 feet longer but with the same beam.

It should be quite similar to your 240. 8' beams were pretty much it back in the 70's. There was a 27 or 28 SR that came out a bit later that was wider. That was a nice boat too.

I spoke to the seller this morning. He says it has an above-deck engine box. He is texting me the hull identification number this evening so I can confirm the approximate year and model. The engine box kills it for me, but I may just go look at it just for my own education. I will post a couple of pics here if I do just in case anyone else is interested. Here is a link to a pic I previously posted of my 240:

I am looking for something like this but without the engine box, a little bigger [length and beam], and trailerable.

If it's a engine box boat I doubt it is a 26 footer. I owned a 26 express and my neighbor has a 26 hardtop. No engine boxes.
