I passed a go-fast on the highway the other day that had a really weird hatch on the hull. Any ideas what it is and why it is located where it is? I am sorry about the picture quality. It is the best I could do at 75 mph!

This comes to my mind from the movie The Hunt For Red October - "Could you launch an ICBM from there?".

Some funny responses!

I did a double take when I saw it and knew I had to get pictures. I thought it was a damn dumb place for a hatch as well.

Inexplicable...
Sure has me curious as hell though- never seen anything like it, and it definitely looks factory. The whole hatch will be underwater every time the boat hits a decent size wave/wake.

Please post the same on THT- much larger readership and someone there might know...

No need to go elsewhere, I’m sure that the “Technical Posters” will chime in with an answer soon enough!!! :smt043:smt043:smt043

Based on the fact that it is posted on a Sea Ray forum about a non Sea Ray boat, you probably will not get a good answer here???

The boat looks like a Hallet. Hallet offers that as an option on some models. I have seen several in person. It certainly is convenient for beach access, the installation is quite robust, and Hallett is known for building a very high quality boat. Still, it is an option I would probably skip.

:smt115:smt115:smt115...may be it's the new disappearing fender by Besenzoni :grin::grin:

Good call on the Hallett - found this picture on their web site. Apparently it is for boarding when you have beached the boat....

10-4 on hallett quality

saw some wicked nice ones on mead last winter when down there.
would be my first choice for that style of boat:thumbsup:

no offense to sea ray:smt038

ANCHOR CHUTE DUH! Honestly that is weird! IF that is factory it has to be a watertight, self bailing or pumped compartment. But what the hell would anyone want a door on the side of the hull for? If its for access to something why couldn't you do as any other boat co. does and access it from the INSIDE? I'm thinking for beaching it could be a handy storage compartment but thats it. I sure wouldn't want that thing shearing off in any kinda seas.

Must be for really short people.
