"It stopped hissing, maybe it will be ok"

Good grief, just like I don't have enough to do with the boat already. Is a punctured what-ever-it-is in the freezer repairable? I now have a tiny pin hole it one of the ridges that evidently carries coolant. Any thoughts on repairs, or am I relegated to a new unit? It is a Norcold that is about 5 years old. The PO replaced it.

Had a dock neighbor do this same thing. I believe they researched repairs and came up empty $1000+ later they have a new ice maker.

The cooling tubes are usually aluminum so a repair, while technically possible, isn't feasible. It will be hard to do because the freezer will have to be disassembled and the damaged part taken to a local shop with TIG welder, but the problem will be finding someone good enough to heliarc very thin aluminum. I'd say you are probably better off investing the time in shopping for a replacement instead of a welder.

Looks like the old school cooler and bags of ice approach for the rest of the summer.....

I thought I was probably the only one to ever do that. Could be the start of a new CSR sub level club. The "Guess what I tore up Club".

What about Peltier Thermoelectric Cooling Plates? Don't know if it would be cost effective or not. If it's cold you need and not frozen, I'd opt for a dorm fridge. At less than $100 they are a consumable item every couple to 3 years.

My dock neighbor did the same thing. He did repair it. I will ask him how.

don't think a dorm frig will run off of 12VDC so while you are away from shore power you would have to run the genny or have a large inverter with lots of battery juice available to invert to 110VAC........

^^^ You are correct Cliff. When the OP said freezer my mind went to 120 VAC only like the ice maker in my 330. My bad.

I figured in TN either shore power or Gennie would be running 24/7 to beat the heat.

Update: Purchased a Vitrifrigo DP2600 from Defender on sale. Arrived today. Looking forward to getting the new fridge on the boat. It has been less than enjoyable dragging a cooler down the dock for the last year. This replaces the Norcold unit that was previously installed.

Best of luck with it, I also have that same model from the Defender sale last year!
Fit in the same spot (different boat) and seem pretty good so far.......

Enjoy,

This thread title brings back memories... I "stabbed the freezer" on a boat that I had already sold. I was trying to be a nice guy by defrosting the freezer for the next owner. I got a little impatient, and .... $1,300 later the new owner got a new fridge. And of course I had to re-hang the doors to reverse the hinges and swap out the stainless panels, which os more than a PITA than it should be. Good times!
