Ready to sink this damn thing

I have been a large diesel marine mechanic for 11 years, Plus out boards. I refuse to take my boat to te dealer who charges $260 for an oul change on an engine that holds 4 quarts and a filter. And opy $160 an hour. I am simply asking people who have most likely known common problems of a 4cl mercruiser. If need be I can rebuild from the crank up. I was just lookig for imput. It is most deff something with the valve train as adjusting lash makes a difference. And ive heard that the hydro lifters go out on these. So i think that will be my next step.

Ok, I'm with you then. I just think it's funny to see some people try to fix a marine engine, not knowing what they are looking at, nor what they are doing. But expect someone to "walk them thru' some maintenance issues. Then tell someone giving them advise, that don't sound right. lol

Thanks, Ive been wrenching since i was a kid And then became a marine mechanic. However ive never had the pleasure of dealing with An old carbed 4 cylinder. However They all work the same Suck squeeze bang blow. Ive never worked on something with hydraulic lifters And after talking with my pops He said theres a chance one of them could not be holding oil Causeing my slop in the valve train. So my next step is pull the rockers and push on each lifter and see if any are spongy. Lifters on this engine are easy enough to replace And at $10 a piece I mite donit for piece of mind. I do remember some one saying to check the timing advance as they some times stick? Is that locater in or under the disributor

Should be advance weights and springs under the breaker/pickup plate. Make sure they are free and not rusted in place.
