Reading Oil Level

I have not recieved my owners manuals yet for the boat I purchased in March. I have also searched the threads and have not found my answer. How can I verify the oil level within my 8 liter Mercrusier engine? I have basically been making sure that the level is not changing much but there is no typical fill/full marks that I can see.

My dip stick is a cable witha brass end about 1 inch or so long. Is it full if the oil covers this piece?

Not sure, but I would think to check your oil you have to be sitting in the water. Others can chime in here.

I've heard it needs to be level in the water too. I also found if you check it immeadiatly after running some of the oil is still stuck to surfaces inside the motor and needs to drain down before you get a true measure on the dip stick. My 4.3 has marks on the dipstick and the level is lower if I check it after running without letting it sit.

That is what mine looks like. Thank you very much. Hopefully my manuals will be in shortly but until then this give me what I have been looking for.
