Hi all. Iv currently have a searay 200 with a brand new 4.3 v6 fuel injection engine. I'm looking at selling it to get a bigger boat, but a friend of mine has a 1991 searay 220 da that he's just spent 1000s on and sadly his motor failed in a big way. It has the 5.7 v8 in. Now my question is I can get it cheap but would my new v6 go in and be enough to power it or will it be to under powered with it being a bigger boat. Obviously wouldn't be as fast but its a chance to upgrade for little money

The 1991 220 da has a listed dry weight of 4000 lbs. That's on the heavy side for a 22' boat. Adding 300-500 lbs. of fuel, water supplies and people is more than that little motor will handle. Will it move the boat? Yes. Will it plane? Probably. Will you be happy with it? Absolutely not. And that motor will use more fuel trying to move that big load than a bigger motor would. Also I believe the outdrive for a 4.3 has a different gear ratio than the 5.7. The 220da wasn't even offered new with a 4.3L. The standard, and smallest motor was a 5.0L.

When my 1985 23' Cobalt was new it had a 5.7 and it weighs dry, 3900 lbs. It had a 5.7L, 260HP engine and I can't imagine having anything smaller in that boat. In fact it currently has a 6.2L, 383 Stroker motor in it and that seems just right.

I would sell your 200 and use some of that money to get a rebuilt 5.7L long block or even better a 350 Magnum. But trust me, you would never be happy with the 4.3L motor in the 220....and you would have a very hard time selling it. People don't like under-powered boats.

Let us know what you do.

As I thought but I weren't sure on what engine options they came with. Thank you that's made my decision easier
