Guys,
I have twin Raymarine E 120 displays. The other day Both units started cycling completely off then on again about every 10 mins. I checked my battery voltage. I shut power off to them , pulled fuses.. EVEN A MASTER RESET.... Nothing helps.... Anyone have a clue ? Doesnt matter if u run eitherone of both. Happens no matter what

Rob

Check the voltage at the electronics 12v bus under the helm... Not at the battery.

How old are your batteries? Were the engines running when this happened?

I had the same situation this past weekend. I traced it to Sirius Weather and having "display storm tracts' turned on. When I disabled that it was fine. Talked to Raymarine today and they confirmed they are receiving reports of this problem and it being related to the storm track feature.

So, don't know if you have the Sirius weather, if you do try turning off storm tracks.

Paul,
I do have the weather. Not sure if its on but probably is . I lost all my data as im an idiot but thats another subject. When i did my back up I backed up my waypoints , then my routes then tracks. Looks like one overwrites the other.... so all i have are tracks ... with no waypoints...

Gary,
Why would voltage be different at the buss ? Loose connection ? The entire dash gets power off that Buss it appears.

Rob

Loose connections, corroded connections, or too much stuff being added to the bus and/or the gauge of wire feeding it is not big enough so the voltage drop is too much.

Rob, you probably did not lose the data. The files do not overwrite eachother. You just have to restore them from the chip one at a time.

When i did the restore .. I selected restore all ( which is not how I saved them ) all i had were tracks which was the last item I saved. I'll try and restore each individually. Made a 4 hr run From riverhead NY to Merrick NY with a hand held garmin....

Seagull I hope ur right... Ill keep yea posted.

Thanx everyone

Rob

The E series displays really suck up the voltage, and they are voltage-sensitive. Like Gary said check the voltage at the bus with a multimeter with all the electronics turned on. I needed to run another pair of wires to the bus on my boat, the 10ga factory wiring wasn't sufficient to handle the load without excessive voltage drop.

I've heard it said, and this confirms it. Unlike the old R series stuff, the C and E series does not have its applications programmed down to bare metal. The E and C have an operating system. Anyone want to guess as to which operating system is embedded? Think of an OS where a single faulty feature can bring down the entire system. That's right, it's clunky old Windoze! Specifically, it's supposed to be Windoze CE.

Microsoft is really busy crapifying everything. Wait until they embed windoze into smartcraft and finish off that product.

Best regards,
Frank C

So other than you complaining, AGAIN, how does your post contribute to the possible cause of what Rob is experiencing?

I had the same situation this weekend on my C80 and it was related to the Sirius Weather also. Every time I tried to zoom in or out the system did a complete power off / power on cycle….. Weird

This has never happened in the past and only did it when the weather screen was displayed.

Storm tracks??? Did not try that, Hurricane too much for it??

Bill, yes it did appear to be directly related to having storm tracks 'displayed". When the weather screen was displayed everything was fine until I enabeled the storm tracks, the unit then went into a "reboot" cycle until I turned off storm tracks. And yea, was trying to track the hurricanes, have family in that area.

I did not realize that the storm track was the issue. I normally keep them on and I am zoomed in on my area so the screen is not that cluttered. In this case I was trying to watch the track of the Hanna as it was headed our way. I have done this many times in the past and never had this issue; my first thought was I hit the power button by mistake. After several re-boots I knew it was not me anymore but did not trouble-shoot it any further.

Thanks for your post though, I thought something was wrong with my unit.

I have only been using the weather system since June and have used the storm track feature previously and never had a problem. This past weekend was the first time it happened. Maybe to many storms at once to be tracked :)

As Frank said, these newer chartplotter/radar units are all embedded operating systems. If I recall correctly, Windows XP Embedded (I don't think they have Windows "CE" anymore) is what is used for the graphics on the Raymarine E series graphics and a Linux kernal is used for some other stuff. They talked about it in a past issue of Power and Motoryacht magazine. Furuno is suffering the same fate with the NavNet 3d stuff as it is just the MaxSea charting application sitting on some OS (probably Windows XP as well). I get nervous because these things all have hard drives, albeit shock mounted, but has anyone ever seen a hard drive last more than 3-5 years? And anyone care to guess when the hard drive will fail? 20 miles offshore. Even the newer flash based drives wear out over time... I do think if you use these products, you need two of them... for backups. Plus... how does one update Windows XP Embedded? Bugs bugs bugs

Gary,
I tried making the slave plotter the master. Then i had to make the master the slave. That did not work well. My radar and gps positions did not tranfer over to the NEW master . So having TWO doesnt mean ur out of harms way. And from my experience one chartplotter will contaminate the other.

Rob

Yeah... I'm not into that whole Master/Slave thing.. I was referring to having things set up as separate systems with automatic failover on things like the GPS. I don't think you can split a radar but having two GPS Chartplotter systems is fairly easy.

Also, as most of you know, I addition to my Raymarine RL80CRC system I have a PC based system running Coastal Explorer. On my way to Block Island this summer the RN300 GPS crapped out which is already set to slave mode from the Raystar 125 GPS. However, when the RN300 crapped out it started trashing the SeaTalk network so it brought down all the electronics on the network. My PC system, because of the multiplexer bridge and failover on the secondary GPS, was still working fine and got me to Block. Also had my paper charts and did an entry on those about 10 minutes before the Raymarine crap went south.
