I have a 2005 AJ290. It is equipped with the Raymarine classic C80 GPS/Radar/Fishfinder. I wasn't getting any data on the fish finder, after digging deeper it appears that the DSM box had been taken out of the boat at some point and never put back. I don't have much history of what was installed on this boat. Is there anyway to find out what transducer was installed? Does Sea Ray only install one basic transducer for their electronics? There are 2 different Raymarine DSM modules to choose from, the DSM 300 and the DSM 30. The DSM300 is for 12v or 24v systems and can handle a transducer up to 1kw. The DSM30 is for 12v systems only and can only handle a transducer up to 600w output. The DSM30 is much cheaper than the DSM300 and would like to get that one if it will work.

Any ideas/thoughts?

Without getting too technical, IMO it comes down to how deep do you need the system to read the data from and also is your transducer (do you know what model you have?) compatible with both DMS30 and/or DSM300? From what I hear we have good number of people here that use DSM30 and it works fine for them. I just installed it on my boat, but it hasn't splashed yet, so I can't tell you much from first hand experience.

I do not know what transducer is installed. The boat is in the water. I have the transducer cord but I don't think that has the model of the transducer on it.

Also, the boat will only be used for inshore fishing. I don't think I am in need of the DSM300 unless the transducer is wrong for the DSM30. Just not sure how to find out.

I'm almost positive that if you're thinking to buy DSM300, then your transducer will work fine for DSM30. However, I would investigate to know for sure. Take your HIN and send email to Sea Ray asking them for transducer model installed on your boat. Then, go to Raymarine site and see if it's comatible with either DSM unit. Then, you'll make your final decision.

Good luck.

Prior to splashing, I had a transducer installed and relied on the Seller's statement that it was compatible with both. Mine isn't and I just had to order (promptly and fairly priced from Jim at BOE, btw) a tranducer for my DSM300...and now have to have the friggin' boat pulled to get it installed. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Note to self. Always call either Raymarine or Jim with part numbers before assuming this stuff actually works together.

Ouch, I bet you're kicking yourself for that one. This is why I was suggesting to Youngin19 to do the homework and make sure he's got the correct info on the ducer before spending any money.

I had a C80 and went for the DSM300. I think that it is all up to the tranducer that you have. best and cheapest info is to call raymarine in NH. They are very helpful and free!!!
