OK, I admit I'm an idiot.

After not seeing the boat for 9 months (it has been in the dealer's showroom since October), we splashed her yesterday.

The radar unit and tv antenna had to be removed for transport, so I reinstalled them today.

Being impatient, excited, and just plain dumb, I forgot that the C80 display was powered on (I turned it on earlier to play with the weather from the Sirius module) when I connected the wires inside the radome. When I came down from working up on the arch, the C80 was dead. I unplugged everything from the back of it, plugged the power back in, and still dead. I tried the master reset by holding the left soft button while powering up, but nada - still dead.

I didn't find a blown fuse under the dash.

Have I fried the thing? Anyone experience this before? Can it be repaired or do I just suck it up and go shopping?

Ahhhh, one day with the boat and another thou' down the drain...

Well, I'm a bigger idiot than I first thought. So here I am, thinking I've fried the innards of my display (since there was a warning in the manual cautioning against plugging the radome in when the display was powered on). I didn't want to be without it for the weekend, so I bought one on eBay yesterday and had it overnighted. Connected it and nothing. Turns out a little 10 amp fuse, which I had previously pulled out, held up to the sun (without my reading glasses on), and thought it was fine. Nope. It was burned out.

Watch for a slightly used C80 in great shape on eBay in the next few days...

Ouch.

Rule # 1 in Troubleshooting Electronics..... "keep it simple stupid"!
Sorry for your Monetary PAIN!
Cheers :smt089

While i would like to have the E80, I didn't want to be forced to upgrade from the s50 to the s100 Sirius module, which is a huge jump in price for identical functionality. I'm pretty sure I can get my money back from the second unit.

I have lots of experience with electronics, and consider myself an expert. I checked this fuse though and got it wrong. I thought I'd share this experience to help others - especially those with less experience than I - troubleshoot their own problems when they arise...

As a Long Suffering MGB owner I hear you. Lucas Electrical, "The Prince of Darkness", Don't let the Smoke Out!

Do you have room for a second display? If so I would add the display to your system.

I did think of that. There isn't really room at the helm for it to be built in, but I guess I could mount it on top. That would be cool... But maybe I have to wait for the 480da to have duallies... ;)

Don't worry, we all have to pay the "stupid" tax from time to time.....it happens.
I guess we can only hope to minimize these occurrences... Although most non boaters think the actual boat price is the stupid tax to begin with... :|

Andrew;

My RL80C went out completely and I suspect the fuse went on mine also . Can you tell me the location of the fuse block and how you accessed it.

Thanks,

John S.
