im starting the last of my electronics upgrade, the Backbone. I have everything I think I need. A starter kit plus a 5 port connection. But I have a question. Once it's all in place do I still need to be sure each componet has its own power or does the Backbone provide the power?

You still need power to the instrument in some fashion. Backbone just carries the information on big stuff. Some nmea devices on a network have poe
and some need their own power. What are you connecting?

It depends on the component. Larger devices such as my Axiom MFDs require their own power source but smaller devices such as my i70, i70p and transducer plus a few others are powered off the backbone.

My GPS mushroom a small Ray camara and a transducer.

The radar and the Es9 will have to be on their own

If you are adding a backbone to existing equipment, just don’t unplug the equipment. It’s already receiving power through separate connections. If you are adding all new equipment on the new backbone, read the installation instructions in the manuals of the new equipment. They almost always have wiring diagrams and instructions.

Make sure and check the Raymarine guidance on this. There are plenty of references and information out there including a forum on the Raymarine site. Each piece doesn't need separate power but it is not just as simple as "the big ones" do. There is also the issue of balancing the instruments getting power from the network so there's an even draw on each side of the input tap. Will it work if you just plug it all in? Likely, but is it absolutely reliable so something won't blip at a critical time? Do the research and ask Raymarine.

Good point about balancing.

So far I've got the T's in place and my external GPS plugged into one of the T's. Power is pretty well balanced

The camera and depth finder each have a different kind of connection which has me wondering if I'm not doing something right.

I swear I'd paid someone to do this but I do want to try.

Update, I've added a Network switch for the Cam220 and transducer with a Raynet to SeaTalk switch. I've added a bluesea fuse panel to my Aux switch. That has helped clean up the wiring and cables. Once I get everything in place I will send pictures.
