Hello all

upon start up my chartplotter has difficulty locating satellites. It only finds 1 and it really takes a long time. However if I immediately go int the menu and go to gps and hit restart gps it finds them much quicker. It almost seems as if the gps is not starting on power up. Has anyone had this issue?

also as an aside, I'm getting buzzing thru the stereo with the ac converter switched on at the panel. I'm guessing a grounding problem somewhere? Any ideas? As always thanks!!

Overall battery condition will affect electronics. That being said it sounds like battery in the GPS is failing. The GPS has a battery to hold the last known position because it does take that long to get the satellite fix.

Assuming you have the same vintage GPS, Raystar 125, then you can replace the battery yourself. You can tell if it is a 125 by the presence of a LED on the top of the unit. Unscrew the bulb, then there are two screws that hold the top to the bulb. The top is the actual GPS. The top is in two pieces, after you unplug it, there are six tiny phillips screws on the inside. Pop the flat piece off and the battery is underneath in a holder. It is a flat coin sized one you can buy in any drugstore.

No LED and it's the older 120. That one has the battery hard wired. It can be replaced by a technician. You will have to search for someone. I believe there is a guy on the Hull Truth who does this.

Thank you Henry. This is very helpful. Of course I have the 120 which will make things more challenging. Will need to track down a technician somehow or replace the unit with the 125.

The buzzing in the stereo - Is it like 60 Hz hum we used to get with old tv's?
Your converter/charger may have some capacitors going bad.

Check the grounds you mentioned first if you are having multiple problems....
