I just purchased a 2000 sundancer 340. It has an original ray marine c-80 chartplotter. I downloaded the newest version software from ray website and tried to update. It is currently running version 2.14. The latest was 5.16. It would not even recognize the software? Can these units still be upgraded? I also planned on buying new charts. I was advised to buy new micro sd version and use cf card adaptor so new charts could also be used in future with newer plotters. I was told on sat the adapters do not work. Anyone have expense with this?

I think the old old software version - needs Compact Flash card <= 2GB capacity to work. Later versions I think made "provisions" for up to 4GB compact flash card. But I am no Raymarine expert. But Raymarine sells a SD to Compact Flash adaptor??....

ohh - just found a FAQ... http://www.raymarine.eu/knowledgebase/?view=3762 that lists everything you ask ... 32-256MB Compact flash needed and SD/CF Flash adaptor works with software > 5.something.

Kaz is correct, you need a smaller capacity CF "Compact Flash" card and I think they need to be formatted FAT16. I just updated to the version 5.16 from 3.18. I initially bought a 4 GB, but didn't work. Luckily, I found a 32 MB.... NOT GB) CF on Amazon for about 12 or $13 bucks and I believe they are still there. (Lower capacity cards are becoming less common and harder to find). You know the card works if the unit boots directly to the System update screen.

Hope this helps.

Yes, they are correct, you need a small card for the update. (After the update you can use a larger card) I tried with a couple "small" cards and it wouldn't read. I brought the head unit into my local Ray dealer and he updated it in 5 mins, au gratis. Few more display options now, and it now also supports AIS etc.

Yep, Kaz is right. I think there was a bulletin on RM site on this while back. If I recall, I have 64MB CF card that I used for any user data (where I backup all my routes, tracks and waypoints) and/or upgrades.

Ditto on the small CF card, I also ended up getting a 32 MB card just for the upgrade.

A note of caution on this upgrade. Prior to the last upgrade, the C80 would sync data from an attached radar with GPS on the display WITHOUT needing a heading sensor. Post upgrade, a heading sensor will be required. If you have radar, double check to make sure you have the heading sensor installed otherwise you are looking at a $ 800 upgrade.

Thanks for the heads-up. Is there a way to check if I have a heading sensor through the chartplotter?

I don't think you can find a small memory card in the stores these days. I had to buy my online. They're cheap too.
