Raw water pump impeller---89 300 Weekender---454 inboards

I recently got impeller and housings for 65 ea from napa... tried fo 4 hrs to change it out and put it back in finaly gave up and asked a mechanic friend for some help... damn what a tight area...

NAPA sells aftermarket stuff. It's the same stuff as Sierra - I think many of the part numbers are the same. I've always bought the Merc stuf for everything but plug wires but I know people who have gone aftermarket and it worked out well for them.

Rondds you are spot on... Napa carries Sierra stuff never had a problem with them... have used on the dink motor and the Mercs for several years my machanic friend suggested the sierra products...

This last time around I used all Sierra parts (impeller, gaskets, new pump body) to rebuild my raw water pump and it all worked out great. Of course, time will tell, but honestly since I check it yearly and rebuild it every 2 years at minimum I don't foresee any issues.

Project completed but not by me. I guess you could say I wimped out doing it myself, however comfortable with my choice and someone to fall back on if issues arise.

I decided to let the experts do this one and now I know where I stand. Total $700 cdn including replacing both intake hoses from the strainers to the pumps. Both housings were worn, and one impeller ready to disintegrate. I also now have one spare impeller.

I wish to thank everyone who took their time to contribute, provide advice, detailed specs and illustrations.
Very much appreciated.
Thanks
Ken

I have a 454 w/I/O and changed my impeller last week. It was a relatively easy job once you wedge yourself into the bilge which was almost impossible. I laid a 8" wide board across the 2 stringers that allowed me to lay down on my side. Once down there I was not about to get out until the pump was removed so I had someone with me to hand me the tools needed. It's sort of like childbirth, you swear to God you will never do it again during the process, but after it's over you begin to think well that wasn't so bad let's do it again.

Good job !!
With my twins you cannot even lift one of the batteries out between the engines. Same space situation for the starboard engine and the fuel tank.
Standing on my head with tri-focals---nope--not going to go there either.

Do a twin and you won't be thinking that wasn't so bad - let's do it again - trust me!

I agree and have never done it. It took the pros 4.3 hrs to do both engines. Charged me for 3.5 including replacing the intake hoses from the seacocks to the pumps which I thought was very reasonable. It probably would have taken them half that time to carefully extricate me from the engine bay.

I can certainly appreciate the lack of space with twins. That's why I specified 'A' 454, if there we 2 of those puppies in my bilge I would not of even attempted it.

Yes, I know you had specified a single, however cudos for doing it yourself anyway. Even with the single elbow room is a premium.
