The scenario is two MAG 350s/BIIIs/DTS/Axius.

When my port engine is in forward gear, I am hearing a random "ticking/clicking" noise coming from the engine compartment. It is not a constant patterned sound, but the noise is always there, and it's something of a piece-of-cardboard-flapping-in-fan-blades-noise. (And then imagine pulling the cardboard in and out of the fan at random intervals to replicate the unpredictability of the sound.)

This does not happen when the engine is in reverse or neutral. Only forward. And the stbd engine is not making the noise.

I don't seem to have any power loss from the engine as it easily hits 5200 RPM, and when I do engage it in forward, I move in that direction immediately.

It seems like something might just be loose, but I'm not sure what yet. I'll be doing a further diagnosis this weekend, but if anybody has had something similar happen, it's always helpful to squash the variables and look at the constants!

I had a ticking sound coming the 496 Mag on my '08 280DA and it turned out to be a riser gasket. In addition to the ticking, I noticed black soot in the engine room on the starboard side. It looked like it was spraying out from somewhere. The diagnosis was a small leak in the riser gasket causing exhaust to shoot out and also was the reason for the ticking. The gasket was replaced and the noise went away.

May or may not be your problem but could be a place for you to start.

It turns out the shift actuator is making the noise.

I'm going to have a further inspection done to see if repair is an option, but I can't help but think it's going bad, and that's a cool $1,100 part. :smt013
