MerCruiser® 4.3L Alpha I MCM Sterndrive w/Turn-Key Start (190 hp - 142 kW)
Hello All,

I have a Sea Ray 185 sport (year 2008) with an MerCruiser® 4.3L Alpha I MCM Sterndrive.

I am getting a random engine alarm when going over 30 MPH. Usually the alarm can be just a second or two and other times will remain with the bip until I slow down.

I have been trying to figure out the conditions to reproduce the bip… I have notice it usually occurs when going between 35~40RPM. If I get the constant bipping, going a little faster or slower will stop it. If going faster (over 40RPM) it will bip randomly.

If I stay below 30 MPH - 35 RMP, I rarely get the alarm.

Also, sometimes when I start the engine the alarm will remain ON until I shut down and start the engine again.

When the alarm occurs the temperature (around 170) and oil pressure (around 60) seem normal.

Sometimes I get the alarm 1 second alarm when I go over a wake.

Less often than the above, I will get the alarm but the OIL pressure will be high -almost at 80. Slowing down to idle and starting again resolves the problem.

Last year I was not having these problems. I had my boat service at the dealer for Winterize and the 100 hour maintenance. I am guessing something was done wrong in the maintenance … perhaps wrong oil weight or bad oil filter???

So far I have taken the boat out to the lake 3 times, and got these random alarms in all of the trips.

My knowledge on these things is next to 0. Any ideas?

I will be taking the boat back to the dealer for service sometime this week but any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome aboard!

Your alarm will only sound off for 3 things: Low oil pressure, High engine temp or Low drive lube. The only other thing that could make an alarm sound on your boat (other than any aftermarket add-ons) would be the OEM depthfinder (if you have that option).

Assuming your gauges are correct, the only other thing for you to check is drive lube. I would still check your engine oil level and run it on muffs to verify good water flow, but low drive lube sounds like a logical first step.

It was a faulty sensor as per the service guys. Thanks.

considering I'm chasing alarms right now like a fox after rabbits - I'm inquiring too! :)

Which one? Which one? :)
