So while cruising in our 2005 270 sd with 496 and smartcraft I get a 2 beep alarm randomly. I have ran it three days in a row for hours each day and no alarm and a different given weekend I will get the alarm once or twice. It has always happened while cruising, if I shut it down and restart the alarm is gone and everything is fine. The temp and all other gauges are good but it is a little concerning to passengers that the check engine light/ alarm was on. I do not have a scanner and if it continues I will have it scanned this off season but figured I would look for any advice.

Tracking down one of those alarms without scanning the onboard computer is nearly impossible.

I figured this much, But guess I was hopefull. A local shop told me to watch gauges and take the alarm with a grain of salt.

Here are all of the items that can cause the 2 beep alarm - go find it....
cam sensor fail, open circuit coolant temperature high or short, open electronic spark timing or short, open in fuel injector circuit or short, bad IAC, knock sensors 1 and 2, MAP short or open circuit, short or open in oil pressure circuit, open or short in exhaust manifold circuit, open or short in raw water pressure circuit, open or short in TPS, TPS range high or low.

As as you can see, almost all 2 beep issues are failed sensors - need the software to look up stored codes.

Is it a fast or a slow two-beep? Does it throw a check engine warning on your smart craft gauges? Does it come and go? Does it go away when you idle? Does it come on when you put the boat under stress (going fast)?

It is random I have gone all day with no alarm and the next time out it will happen once. It is a slow beep, the check engine warning does come on the smart craft gauge. Has always happened while in the 3-4k rpm range. It has gone away at idle and other times not without restarting then it is fine. I'll bring it by a local shop to get scanned but figures asking was worth a shot.

My boat is old school, so don't have any of this, which might be worse since it can't tell me there is a problem until there really is a problem and it's running bad - other than the basic oil pressure, low gear lube alarm. My gripe here with Smartcraft and the other manufacture onboard systems and also ODBII on car engines - the systems have the codes, so why don't they display the code and message so you can diagnose it without scanners and a trip to the dealer etc. When you off on a day on the lake or a week long trip up the coast, it would be nice to be able to quickly look at a real code and message to know what the system is barking about so you can decide how critical it is to address. I mean we can show exactly where your boat is in the world on a plotter and lay every imaginable piece of data on it, my phone can start my car and roll down the windows, but the manufacture can't display an ECM code? I know someone is going to say it's how the dealers make money yada yada, but really that just doesn't fly in the world today. It's just insane with the systems on a $100k boat or car you have to go find a dealer with a "special" tool to read a code! Seems the same software running on the "reader" could just as easily be running on the ECM.

Sorry, I know this doesn't help your situation, just a frustration when I see questions about alarms on boats or check engine lights on cars - and later when I hear someone paid the dealer $100 to tell them the outside temperature sensor in the driver's mirror had dirt on it and threw a CEL code and oh the good news is a little Windex and another $50 fixed it!

!st thing I bought when I took delivery of this smart craft boat was a code reader. Don't like being a dealer victim. $500. I'll sell it when I sell the boat

Unfortunately unless you want to be held hostage to the dealer that is what you have to do - I have an ODBII scanner for my cars. Paid for itself the first time I used it.

Sorry, I won't hijack this thread any further, just a hot button with me. :smt013

Mine started the same thing last Sunday. As I have learned this week and as is stated above, there are 30-40 things that give the 2-beeps/minute. Due to some observations I made and some things that occurred, I was able to narrow mine down and got lucky. Mine is a faulty IAC. Would not idle, then would not start in the idle position. However, it will start with the throttle advanced. Good luck!
