Ran aground... boat stopped like I had breaks! :-(

Sorry H20NUT. Guess i made another mistake.

Nothing to be sorry about... wasn't picking on ya, just surprised no one pointed that out. There was a little grammer lesson going on earlier.

And, believe it or not, I have been asked by someone........... Where is the brake pedal? How do you stop? I told them they had to sit on the back of the boat and hold the anchor and toss it in when I tell them, and make sure they hold onto the rope. They actually went to pick up the stern anchor from the back deck... :smt100:grin:

I had a friend on board who asked when 'they' turned the street lights on at night so we could see where we were going.

Three-ish years ago on the Potomac a guy ran a 380DA up on to the beach at night. The boat was going fast enough to put the bow into the treeline, which, depending on tide, can be 20-30 feet from the water's edge. The SR dealer techs who helped recover the boat said the helm and salon looked like a crime scene-blood everywhere from bodies impacting the boat when it made the sudden and violent stop.
The boat was out of commission for nearly a year.

Wonder what that guy now pays for insurance, assuming he can get anything more than basic liability coverage.

I found myself running in the dark while returning my 320DA to the slip after a late afternoon fuel stop upriver a couple years ago. I slowed to idle speed and took it easy-I navigated by my radar and plotter. Imagine my disgust when a bass boat crossed my wake, 50 meters astern, at what I estimated to be 30 knots or more. No running lights on the bass boat at all.

We all probably have similar stories of witnessing utter jackassery on the water at night. For this reason I do not run the 420 after sunset if I can help it. I've also made the investment in redundant safety gear on the boat-backup GPS (two) backup VHF (one) and a complete ditch bag and emergency raft.

I think you were extraordinarily lucky to get out of this with only a boat repair bill, and some standard CSR harrassment.

In the past, did you post here as CROCK1?

Just curious.

No... this is my first real post of a bad experience(instead of just asking questions). To tell you the truth, it will probably be my last. I can take heat... you can probably tell from my responses. I try to by nice... but i think some of the comments are a bit too much. Anyways. Enjoy the rest of your night.

Heat??? I think I was called idiot for a whole year.

gnealon- you should be applauded for fessing up to this and seeking advice. It shows a willingness to learn and better your skills. We all learn from our mistakes and sometimes, these are the best lessons. That is what this forum is all about learning valuable lessons from other's experiences.

Hope to continue to see you in the forums!

I would not pull your reserve parachute so quickly.

Sure, some responses can be a bit on the sharp side, but there are a lot of good and knowledgeable people here who are willing to help. And yes, there are a few idiots who post without having a clue what they are posting about, but you quickly ID those guys, consign them to the "ignore list" and life goes on.

When I bought my first SR, an 02 260DA, in August of 04, all I knew was inboard tournament ski boats, because that is all I had ever owned. I asked a lot of questions that were typical of a new express cruiser owner. More experienced Captains on this board took the time to answer, usually patiently. I have become good friends with a couple folks here, and am richer for it.. Everthing I have learned abour running a big Dancer and maintaining diesel engines came from the old SRO, and now CSR. You just have to develop a thick skin and fine tune your idiot avoidance radar, then develop a quick trigger pull on the "ignore" list. There is far more good here than bad.

This hasn't been heat. Heat is when they name a stuffed animal after you. I'm sure someone will explain that if you don't know.

Don't feel too bad. My Uncle was the proud new owner of a 250 Sundancer and first time out with the wife and kids, ran a ground. He had to have Sea Tow come and pull him out he grounded it so bad. And when you thought it couldn't get any worse, some kids drove by and yelled out, "Hey Buddy, you're stuck and we're notttttt", and then kept driving along. At least it was at night and in the fog when no one was around for you. :smt043

Hey look at the bright side.. Everyone on this sight will now remember you when they see your name..

Ohh crap! Every site needs a village idiot. I'll bite the bullet!

No. . .although you made a few boneheaded decisions. . .you are posting in a rational manner. You don't qualify for the village idiot slot.

Gnealon,

Think of it this way, it could of been worse:
